Antis do exist and I've been in fandoms where they are common. It sucks, and they have a real chilling effect on creativity in those fandoms, because no one wants to risk being targeted by them.

someone disliking something or choosing not to read about it or engage with it does not make an anti. Antis are the assholes who run around insisting that fictional things they don't like should not exist, and bully anyone who likes any of those things, don't bow down to them, don't grovel before them, etc.

But yeah, the term does get thrown around way too much.
