[Hamlet]

[identity profile] speaky-bean.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I...do people seriously refer to a character in a Shakespeare play as a Mary Sue? Really? I'm sorry, but if that's the case than fandom has sunk to a new low.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-19 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why, is Shakespeare a holy cow, or something? As an English Literature major, I can now safely say that Shakespeare is way overrated.

[identity profile] speaky-bean.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Literature major myself, just got done taking a course in Shakespeare. I didn't actually enjoy it very much, and I agree with you that he's overrated. But I do feel like applying fandom terminology that only refers to OCs inserted into other people's canon to classic works, is a bit ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Erm, not liking him is one thing, but dismissing Shakespeare as 'overrated' is just absurd, in terms of his influence.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely correct. He stole as much from previous writers as today's writers do from him. Give the guy credit for knowing what the masses want. :-)

Shakespeare certainly isn't overrated, particularly if one thinks in terms of his actual writing (syntax and such), rather than the actual content (which was hardly original).

So yes, even the great Shakespeare can have Mary Sues...and I'm pretty certain he'd admit it up front. After all, a lot (if not most) of his characters are types that either stand in for an ideology or are firmly within his literary tradition.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-19 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope not...

Horatio didn't even have that big a role!

Not that I doubt that fandom is often misogynistic, but I just don't like to think of Shakepeare Sues.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
CAN WE PLEASE STOP THROWING AROUND THE TERM MARY SUE??

[identity profile] typhon-9.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
uhm.... no.

[identity profile] nomiwolf.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay - I'll bite. Explain to me, dear OP, your reasoning for the statement.

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a numbered Rule yet (a la 34) that states "Every character in every medium will be called a Mary Sue by someone at some point in time?" There needs to be. Can I designate #325?

And out of all the characters in that play, why pick on Horatio, for gods' sake? Hamlet and Ophelia are much better Tragedy Sue candidates.

[identity profile] angelofcaffeine.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. I agree. But I must admit to being annoyed at all the praising Hamlet did of Horatio, but the fact of the matter was that he was the only non-currupt character. Also... well, he was sort of awesome. <3

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see that now. It's been a while since I read/watched the play. But it's sad that people don't realize there's a difference between being non-corrupt and being incorruptible. I felt pretty sorry for him, the same as for Benvolio. Having morals and respect for life when everybody around you abandons them is awesome.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a production of Hamlet with Horatio played by a female, and... I disagree. Well, nearly every character has been called a Mary Sue at some point, but would many? No.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see what would make him a Gary Stu character. I just don't. He does not strike me as an overly-perfect self-insert character at all.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This secret is awesome.

[identity profile] ink-tree.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
XDD Have an internet.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sometimes the praise could be a bit overboard, but I would hardly count Horatio as a Mary Sue--Hamlet and Ophelia got way more attention than he did. He was just an honest, good man, not necessarily a Mary Sue/Gary Stu.

[identity profile] raven-scarlett.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Erm. Yeah. Don't see it.

[identity profile] cakemage.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really see it either. Is it because he's the only one who lives or because he's the only one who isn't a moron/doesn't have issues coming out the wazoo?

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I am at a loss to see how he qualifies as a Mary Sue, sorry. And no, I don't love him. He doesn't *do* anything!

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think this comm should have a theme day or week of nothing but secrets dedicated to fandoms that COULD have taken place before 1900. Seriously. >:-D

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well-played, OP. Very well-played.
