I kinda assumed they already became canon, or at least as canon as a Naruto couple can be. He obviously liked her, and didn't she say if he came back alive she would return his feelings? I remember something about that, but maybe I need to re-read it. It's sad he never knew though. :(

I don't want my ships to become canon. The way canon ships the characters together never is quite the way I shipped them. The dynamic always turns out a bit different -- and yet it's close enough that I can't hold onto my own way of seeing the characters relating as an AU. Instead it just falls into an uncomfortable uncanny valley where it just feels unpleasantly wrong.

So generally I try really hard not to ship characters who are too obviously on the "eventually canon" path.

I really ♥ Tsunade/Jiraiya too. The thing is, with this manga, one never quite knows what will happen..

Worst case scenario? They end up together in some afterlife or AU or something :D

*points up* And yeah, part of me agrees with velvet_mace. Sometimes canon completely wrecks what could have been a wonderful, beautiful thing.

I hear you, OP; while the rest of the fandom is arguing over potentially-dead-people (ok, not anymore) and how their OTPs are now-canon! or sunk!, the fact that this will never really get to happen absolutely breaks my heart. :(
