I hope this is a troll secret, because you would be a terrible mother to introduce your children to the insanity that is fandom.

Wtf, are you serious? If I ever have kids, I totally would, at least at the PG end of things. My elder sister got me into it. Our mother died before we had home internet, but she was an old-school Tolkien and Lewis fangirl and used to make up Narnia stories to tell us. We would've dragged her into it, I'm sure.

OP, I think you're a bit weird, because trying to control what kids ship is about as hard as trying to control any other part of their sex/love life. Just give them the best advice you can and show them the goodfic, and cross your fingers.

Kids.

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, how would one go about keeping them out of fandom?

[identity profile] angelofcaffeine.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this secret is totally cute. <3 If I ever have kids, I hope they share my love of fandom.

[identity profile] sessile29.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
... uh, what the hell happened to accepting your kids as they are?

And the fact that you wish so hard for them to believe a certain way almost guarantees they'll believe the opposite.

[identity profile] lipstickcrisis.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my... my parents aren't into fandom at all, but I discussed Harry Potter once with my mother and she mentioned that she kind of liked Draco/Hermione (or was Snape/Hermione? Can't remember) because she thinks Ron and Harry aren't smart enough for Hermione and she was kind of shocked that Ron/Hermione ended up being canon.

My mother and I apparently have very, very different tastes in shipping. I wouldn't have it any other way... I would be a little confused (and a more than a little creeped out) if she liked many of the ships I prefer.

[identity profile] speaky-bean.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww! My dad isn't really a fandom guy (though he is a huge dork in a lot of other ways, bless him) but he read Harry Potter and told me he kind of thought it'd be great if Luna and Harry got together, and that he was kind of surprised when they didn't.

I'm not into the HP fandom enough to have shipping preferences, but it is a cute pairing, and it is similar to the sorts of things I usually like.

[identity profile] beyondthescenes.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Same with my mother! She thinks Ron and Harry aren't smart enough for Hermione, too. She believes that in the long run, there's going to be a lot of resentment between Ron and Hermione because she'll always push him to do more or to do this and that, and he'll always have some underlying insecurities over her ever-growing list of achievements. My mother didn't say who she liked for Hermione, though. :)

I agree with this 100%. Romeo and Juliet are a tragedy because they firmly, firmly believe they're in perfect love; Bella and Edward are a tragedy because Stephenie Meyer and fandom believe they're in perfect love. I do think Romeo and Juliet was an incredibly moving relationship, even though I maintain that they were stupid kids, because I don't think it ever pretended to be a True Love Story, just a... tragedy of circumstances and stupid, passionate people.

And IMO at least B/A is completely different to the above as well but I can see how OP's mileage might vary.

Congratulations, OP! I wish all parents would take the time to cultivate shared interests with their children and teach them about healthy vs. unhealthy relationships. I think you sound like a wonderful mother. <3

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-06-19 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you know what, your kids are going to drive you nuts. They are going to think the ugliest clothes imaginable look good, they are going to play music that makes your ears bleed, and they are going to lick posters of celebrities who you feel guilty admitting are hot. Their budding sexuality will squick the ever loving hell out of you. This is just part of being a mom.

But you'll get over it. Because they are your kids. And they are adorable, even though they want you to read Crystal the Sparklepoo Princess of Love every night for a month. It makes them happy and you know they'll grow out of it eventually.

Upshot, they are going to ship who they ship, regardless of what you prefer -- and you aren't going to mind (at least not unless you got your priorities in the wrong place).

Hey, just driving by to say I think it's cool you're adopting. :)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that it'll be a better idea to tell your kids why those kind of relationships are unhealthy rather than plainly saying "don't ship them >:O!" Then, let your kids figure out what kind of ships they like.
But yeah, if I ever have kids or adopt, I'll show them my interests (I already kinda did that to my niece, hehe)

IAWTC. Shipping isn't really important, but using fandom as a basis for life lessons is great.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I find it a little disturbing that you don't care what your kids believe about the important stuff, just who they ship in fandoms. Wjile I applaud you for adopting an orphan, I'm not exactly sure your priorites are in the right place here.

Don't forget to ask the social worker or adoption agency representative who they themselves "ship". That way they can sort you with the right child, because fandom interests are always of the utmost importance when starting a family. Be sure to let them know you write lots of "fanfic" and if they don't share your "shipping" preferences, tell them firmly that YOU WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY ZUTARA IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD. You have to stand firm on this, because if you're not careful adoption agencies, be they state or private, will try to place a Zutaran child into a Kataang family, knowing full well that it will just end in teen suicide. Or, if we're lucky, matricide.
Also, if possible be sure to greet the social worker wearing a t-shirt with pictures of your "shipping" preference, preferably in the form of pornographic fan art. That will remind them that you take these sorts of things seriously and are not to be trifled with.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
My mother's not into fandom, per se, but back when HP4 came out, she had all these wild and crazy theories about why James came out of the wand before Lily (this was before JKR retconned it and made the order different) like that James was really Voldemort and Harry and Hermione were siblings! And Snape was a vampire! And I was like mom, this isn't Star Wars... Still we had a lot of fun discussing our wild theories.

[identity profile] beyondthescenes.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations, OP!

I think it's cool that you'll be taking the time to share all that with your kids. I owe my love of books to my mother, and it was my father who got me into my earliest TV series.

And it's awesome that you'll be able to understand fandom if they ever get into it. When she was younger, my mom used to ship and fangirl local actors and actresses, while my dad was a huge fan of comicbook/fictional heroes in his childhood. So my parents are generally cool about my fannishness. When I was a kid, they let me run around the house yelling "For the honor of Grayskull!" or "Who ya gonna call?", and didn't complain when my walls were covered with pictures of anthropomorphic turtles. Later they insisted that we watch the re-released Star Wars as a family (calling it a must-watch classic), rarely asked why I spent so much time online, and helped me be home on time so I could catch my favorite anime series. Some of the birthday and Christmas presents I got (and still get sometimes) from them were/are fannish stuff.

But I do think that it's sort of impossible to ever completely control what sort of things they'll like, or get into. I think my parents would have been appalled to know the amount of NC-17 fics I read, and that a lot of the guys in my OTPs aren't exactly the type they'd approve of in real life, and that the kind of ships I ship aren't the kind of relationships they'd want me to have. Don't worry, liking something in fandom or fics doesn't automatically mean they'll do it or want it in real life. I think the most you can do is teach them what's healthy/unhealthy, real/make-believe, right/wrong, good/bad, and hope that you've raised them to have the wisdom and discernment to know the difference, and take your words to heart.

I wish you all the best, OP! :)

[identity profile] missdeanna.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think some people have missed the point of this secret.

I don't see it as the OP worrying about her future child's fandom affiliations or caring more about fandom than "important things." Nor do I see it as the OP necessarily wanting to control what her child likes. I see it as the OP being concerned about her child having healthy views of relationships, which I think is a wonderful priority to have. I don't agree with my mom when it comes to everything relationship-related, but I am glad that she encouraged me to not put up with bullshit.

Trying too hard to control your kid's beliefs or interests is a no-no (and shipping isn't always about justifying a relationship--I like some pairings but still feel that they're unhealthy), but encouraging self-worth and healthy ideals should be part of a parent's job, I think.

Ahaha

I don't really have much to say about introducing kids to fandom or whatever but I laughed when I read this, because, well...

My sister and I were raised watching West Side Story all the time, and my mom always made sure to go "GIRLS YOU KNOW THAT'S NOT WHAT LOVE IS REALLY LIKE OKAY? DON'T GO CRAZY OVER SOMEONE YOU JUST MET."

We were like "okay mom we're grade schoolers =|"
