I don't necessarily mind that character so much as I mind that they're always the main character and expected to be forgiven of everything because plot armor, while never actually meaningfully changing because they're the main character and face of the show

If they were ever the side characters that changed out of their dumb shit ways they wouldn't be bad; after all for a character to reform they have to start with the flaws. The ones above don't ever change though. Just chronic dumbasses

Not sure how to respond to this one

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't disagree about the character type being annoying to mildly offensive... but seriously, OP, have you considered therapy and/or separation?

I'm sorry you're dealing with it IRL, OP. I can't stand this character type either. I can only imagine how bad it must be to live with it.

Now I wonder if you've seen Kevin Can F**k Himself or if you'd find it too depressing.

I was going to recommend KCGFH to OP, NGL.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

I was just about to say that this secret reminded me I have to watch season 2...

I was going to suggest it as well!

Everybody Loves Raymond and Ray Romano himself make me see red.

I’ve read about Homer getting dumber and meaner as the seasons went on and new writers replaced old ones.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Even someone wrote about Homer's Flanderization and how he was getting dumber and meaner https://irischinresearch.wordpress.com/2017/02/12/the-flanderization-of-homer-simpson/

I was curious and clicked through, but it sounds like they didn't find any evidence for it. They might have gone about their fact-finding in an unnecessarily mechanical "I have these academia tools and will use them, whether appropriate or not" way, instead of holding their overall impression in their head and then trying to get an idea for what was making them think so, though.

That is, I don't get the impression that what they were looking for can now be ruled out, just that they failed to find it.

I would say they've really course-corrected with Homer in the last few seasons. But they've been better seasons overall. (One nice touch is they have Homer doing a lot more with Maggie in a parenting and bonding capacity. He's better in general, but I find that particular trait a really good one to sort of signal his growth in decency.)

he's been very abusive to Lisa when she wasn't even doing anything and I think this is at least partly because some jerk thinks it's funny when Meg gets abused on family Guy all the time.

:(

With you on this, only it's how I've pretty much always felt about these guys. Such a loathsome character type.

This. And it is fairly misogynistic since it tells men they can be terrible people and not do anything while women have to be attractive, skilled, and do all the work.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Often, yeah.

The other thing that really bothered me about it (though this isn't so much the case with modern shows) was how much the older ones revolved around middle class screenwriters perpetuating ugly stereotypes about working class men. Homer Simpson is the perfect example of that type, with a lot of class aggression and you-deserve-to-be-poor-because-you-suck, while Raymond is more of an example of writers/comedians playing with shortcomings they know they have, but brush off as no big deal.

If your husband is like these guys, then do yourself a favor and get a divorce. I’ve been married the same amount of time and I’m telling you now: marriage should be better after fifteen years than it was the first month. And life is short and shitty so if you’re not happy in your marriage and your partner is unbearable for you: say goodbye. Go and find happiness.

This is why Bob Belcher was a complete revelation. My mom used to complain often about sitcom dads being useless idiots (referencing most of the guys in the secret), but over a decade since BB began we're seeing more and more good father figures.

Hey, OP, are you doing okay?

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2023-07-30 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll just say that king of queens was slightly different (if still incredibly gendered) because in later seasons they often made them mutually inept. there was also an episode where Doug ate something that made him very intelligent and capable and Carrie hated it, which seemed like a cop-out.

Hope you're doing ok, OP. I hate this type of comedy in a lot of situations too. For me it depends on where the intended humor is. I sometimes have really enjoyed writing that uses dysfunctional relationships or family as the backdrop to comedy. If the entire "joke" is just "inept husband and father treating his family poorly" without anything else that's supposed to be funny there, I truly don't care for it. Makes sense if it rubs you the wrong way even if it's handled more sensitively if you're dealing with something similar in your personal life. Seriously wishing you the best.
