I’ve developed a theory about bad accents: a lot of them are like a mathematical function. If an accent replaces E with I, take every instance of E and replace it with an I, with each I sounding exactly like the others. In real life, the pronunciation of some words diverges more than others, and some Is will be relatively more E-like.

Yeah, I think the only accents where you can just across the board replace letters with other letters and be good are made up ones. With the old, heavy and bogus Tranzylvahnian Aksent for fictional Vampires, for instance. Otherwise, the way people actually talk has variation, and words that are harder and easier for a foreign speaker for reasons that aren't obvious to a native.
