But they also have to not be consuming ANY sort of modern media because female characters exactly like Jyn are all over the place, they're not uncommon in the slightest.

I'm not sure that's true, though. There are plenty of female characters who are fighters, but there aren't very many who are very, very obviously traumatized in the way that she is.

That has nothing to do with being 'gender non-conforming,' though? That's a very specific character trope that isn't all that common in either gender.

Fair, but other anon said there are female characters like her all over the place, which there really aren't.

I mean, if that's the only part of her character that you're focusing on, then maybe. But female characters who are uninterested in romance, are capable of taking care of themselves, have their own goals that don't include men, and who aren't traditionally feminine? There's no shortage of those.

I think it's the part to focus on in this case because it's the part that really makes her divisive.

You know how, if a woman isn't smiling, people will ask her to smile, and get offended if she doesn't respond by, well, smiling? That's what I think goes on with Jyn. Everyone wants her to smile (because women should smile), and is really uncomfortable with the fact that she won't.

But people hate male characters who are like that too.

Does no one remember how much hate Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion got for daring to be a depressed, traumatized teenager who didn't want to step up to be a hero?

da

But this seems on target to me.
