Re: What do you miss from the internet of old?

I miss text. Weird blogs, meta essays, message boards, written reviews, etc. Everything is gifs and videos, which is great for the people who want that, but still. I miss text.

Yesss. I miss text so much. I don't want to watch a video, I can read so much faster and retain the information better that way just give me a damn article of text. But also interacting with people, don't get me wrong gifs are fun but I miss conversations with actual words.

Do you think people should be able to monetize fanfic too?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-31 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How is that related? Do you not think actors should be paid?

Youtubers are often hobbyists, much like fic writers. Wondering where your line is in the internet content for fun and/or profit debate.

Creativity

Not saying there aren't some amazing creators out there, but a lot of what I see is just the same trends bouncing off people trying to monetize it. In the old days of geocities nonsense I feel like it was more just a fun experiment in creativity.

Youtubers usually own the content that they create to put out into the world. People seldom own the fandom that they write fanfics for and if they do get caught trying to make a profit off a fanfic, there's a good chance they'll get sued (depending on the origin of the fandom of course).

One thing is not like the other.

I've spent quite a bit of time working on how to get people to thwart/sidestep the algorithms (as it's more than one table). I have found that being very straightforward in rejecting about 50% of my recommendations and varying my browsing habits have been the most effective tactics. Lately I've also noticed that consuming various media made by people 30+ has also given me more to peruse by people who are genuinely interested in creating enjoyable things rather than being influencers.

I have to say that I honestly don't understand the whole "I'm 15 so why are you all so mad at meeeeee?" excuse.

You know how I learned not to be shitty on the internet when I was a teenager? By people calling me out on my shit and not letting me get away with using my age as an excuse. You'd better believe I learned how to behave appropriately from that.

oops misfire, sorry!

Active fan forums. I used to visit so many when I was a kid and now - they're not really a thing or are barely active if they are around.

Also the lack of god damn auto-play videos (especially advert ones that manage to get past my adblock Grrrr). The person who came up with that deserves a thousand slaps to the face.

The thing is: internet 1.0 is still there. It never went away! It didn't even really get harder to find, or smaller. It just got *proportionately* smaller and *relatively* harder to find. I still go to a lot of the same websites I did in 2004 and they're still there and still going. (or, in the case of places like DW, successor websites with the same ethos and core group of people are.)

It's just the other stuff is so much easier that all the people who wouldn't have been on the internet in the 90s at all never find it, and a lot of other people have stopped bothering to look past the glossy algorithm-ridden bullshit and think that because they're not looking for it, it disappeared.

What have most of the Scoobies done that's worse than stealing someone's soul? Stealing someone's soul is, like, really bad.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
We need more pretentious fandoms in the world IMO. There are so many worse things in the world than being pretentious and there's so much hatred of pretension that I think it has a ton of splash damage on things that are actually benign or even good.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
same hat. if the content creators are actually pushing these shitty ads themselves? nah fuck it I'm out (or adblocking)

I miss message boards. I miss AOL webchat. I miss TeamARTAIL. I miss billionaires not having total control over social media.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-31 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, the stuff I'm watching right now is using alllll sorts of stuff that's not theirs. Sure some people are 100% original, but a lot of it isn't.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-31 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
lmfao what

a one-off villain of the week designed to be deliberately annoying because it's how her demon-type feeds off victims is better than...? I hate Xander and I will still say he's better written than a one-off villain of the week, oh my god.

Reliable free image hosting.

Also I know its not old old internet, but I miss the early days of deviantart SO MUCH. Yes I know its known for its fetish art among other things - but I use to avoid that through the fandom groups that would just ban the stuff I didn't want to see and interact with fellow fan artists on there. The last time I really got into the fandom space on DA was the Undertale fandom around 2016. It was insanely active in a way that I had been missing since LJ fell out of popularity and it was a lot harder to communicate on Tumblr at the time. It was also one of the few times I actually took part in contests and events in the fandoms. Everyone commented on works and it was actually a lot of fun (of course there was drama - name a big fandom that has never ever had drama).
It died down after a while, but I was going back there every day until the Eclipse update - then just about every group I was following just about dropped dead. Even with the flaws I miss it and what DA used to be.

Earlier today, someone posted on Tumblr about how Wattpad were now messaging writers for not consistently posting their fanfics and that was a chilling reminder why AO3 is important.
