God, I've seen more people ranting about these antis than I have antis. I'm starting to think that the real problem is people's paranoia here.

Try twitter (or "X" I guess) in the fandom community. It's full of them if you dig far enough. Some places still on fandom tumblr too.

"If you dig far enough" - aye, that's the rub. If you have to dig that far to find examples of a problem, it might - MIGHT - not be as prominent a problem as you're making it out to be.

Some fandoms you don't have to dig far at all. In fact, some of the people who put big fat DNIs all over their profiles can't wait to interact with the very things they have in their DNIs all the damn time.

In my experience, fandoms that skew young tend to be worse about this. Also, I see a lot of it in star Wars and MCU fandoms.

Yeah, my best example is Genshin Impact which has plenty of older people as well but damn, it skews young and it shows.

yeah and I've never had a guy at a comic con or anime con quiz me on how much of a "real fan" I am because I'm a girl. But I don't comment on it when someone else who's experienced it talks about it.

Right? My comic book store is full of awesome people, mostly men, who treat their female cutsomers just as good and I've never had a bad experience. Does it still happen (and probably quite a lot)? Yep.

havily depends on fandom and platform. if you're into any cartoon/anime/game fandom on twitter, it's like 70% antis in every fandom there. FS tends to gather older folks who're more into TV shows, books and movies, so it's no wonder they don't see a lot of antis.

Mmmm...it's more like people mind their own business until weird opinions pop up randomly. And then it becomes somehow more and more loaded.

For me, it was reading a few comments here and there on FS about anti shippers.
And then Sarah Z had a video on it.
And then I saw people making comments on Twitter.
And then random videos from some YT creators have videos in defense of anti shippers.
And the comments in the videos display a lot of hatred towards what anti shippers see as pro shippers.

And I'm like, "Since when is it that 'anti/pro' is about whether or not you approve of taboo subjects/canon compliant fandom ships/head canon?"

Like, seriously, it came out of nowhere for me and now I feel like I see nothing but people drawing lines in the sand.

It feels gatekeepy and moral policing. Like, you just feel people sucking the fun out of fandom and when I feel that I don't want to be there anymore.

I only became aware of it early on because I had the misfortune of knowing a group of anti-shippers irl and briefly followed them on tumblr to be friendly before realizing.

I really don't understand all these people who feel the need when people are venting to come up and say "shut up it's not that much of an issue, I haven't seen many/any actual antis" like... maybe you haven't but.. it costs nothing to let people be concerned. Especially when the damage antis cause have involved people being driven off a site from harassment, people having false accusations spread against them, people sent to mental health clinics after suicide attempts and that one person who almost ingested a needle.

>>I really don't understand all these people who feel the need when people are venting to come up and say "shut up it's not that much of an issue, I haven't seen many/any actual antis"

I tend to assume that's what antis do in stealth mode. Like, is it possible that the person writing that is in only fandoms I've never heard of, that the waves of "you're a horrible person if you ..." haven't yet crashed against? Yes. But if that were me, I would be paying attention with the assumption that it could happen, and I could learn things from the problems other parts of fandom have had with it. I would be asking for where I can observe this behavior and showing it to my friends and talking about how to address it. I would not be telling strangers they're "overreacting" to being mobbed and publicly but frivolously accused of pedophilia.

When someone responds to conversations about interpersonal abuse by trying to hush them up or disrupt them, that's generally telling me they want the abuse to continue.

It feels gatekeepy and moral policing.

It feels like that because that's exactly what it is. People who are already inclined to be bullies have discovered that accusing other fans who like things they don't of being racist/misogynist/homophobic/biphobic/abuse apologists/pedophiles etc. worked and were a powerful weapon in getting what they want.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-01 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience, most of the people who say "lol idk what you are talking about, antis are not an issue" are in one of three groups:
1. They are lucky enough to actually be in fandoms that don't have lots of antis
2. They just don't interact much with fandom tags outside of their chosen circle of people they follow
3. They have opinions that are anti-adjacent themselves and don't see anything wrong with it

What you're not taking into consideration is that you're IN a space where people feel safe getting stuff that bothers them off their chests.
