“Fanfiction is, arguably, largely a Watsonian pursuit. That is, we commit fic, often and in part, to solve issues within the canon as if they are true things within the canon (not a matter of writer error or external interpretation)”— Racheline Maltese

Following up on little jokes is just part of the charm.

But this isn't a question of solving issues in the sense of thematic internal tensions or lacunae. Fic being a Watsonian endeavor doesn't require you to totally erase Doylism from your mind. It doesn't require you to take every jot and tittle of the source with total seriousness. You can balance Watsonianism and Doylism in your head, and fandom doesn't.

Maybe I’m not in the right fandoms to understand this? Like, I’ve heard fandom gets really serious about black comedies where the characters are all terrible people. I’m used to stuff where “being serious” is something fandom puts on and takes off.

DA

Obviously, but for me as a fanfic writer, Watsonian approaches are the really seriously fun part and Doylist ones are a relative buzzkill that I enjoy far less.

I am not sure that's the same thing.

I watch Doctor Who kind of casually and don’t really engage with other fans, so I’m not sure what kind jokes/Easter eggs this is referring to.

Does anyone have specific examples?

Like Scotty's joke about repairs in Star Trek 3, it clearly a joke but fandom took it completely literally. I swear, some fans have no idea how people actually talk.

Marvel fandom and Budhapest. Whedon never meant for it to be that deep.

I agree on Star Trek, but with Doctor Who it's not like we can get any more ridiculous than the stuff that's actually shown in the show, which makes expanding on those off-handed references/jokes both appropriate for the fandom and a lot of fun imo.

hmm i think this is one of those things were if the whole fandom is doing it, then I think there's a core annoyance or perspective at play here, rather than people not getting that its a joke. and i do think there's something enjoyable about, i don't know, exploring the vagaries of communication.

that said...reading comprehension/critical reading isn't that expansive and is getting more limited by the day i fear. so it really could also be that, and frankly I would avoid fandoms where everything is literal.

GEORGE LAZENBY SAYING "THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO THE OTHER FELLOW" DOES NOT MAKE THE FUCKING STUPID "JAMES BOND IS A CODENAME" THEORY CANON
