Doesn't seem like an especially spicy kink to me, but then, I watched anime as a kid. That seems to make for much more tail-acceptance than you find among non-fandom sorts. Although animation in general is pretty willing to do the anthropomorphic animal thing, to a greater or lesser extent, and they usually go for small-of-back tail placement.

Technically I think part of why that became a thing, within the cosplay/furry community, was because the first home-made tail tutorials that circulated used a belt to keep it attached to the body. It's rather trickier to figure out how to anchor something right above the crack of your ass, even if said thing is flexible enough to adust to the way humans sit. Which a lot of fake tails aren't!
