That's the thing and the trap about humans. One blanket statement about them being wrong doesn't make the opposite blanket statement correct.

Is it not easier to simply agree it depends on who and how and when?

I've certainly noticed thT more and more fans are incapable of seeing things from any point of view other than their own. It is getting depressing.

From what I've read, history says when the state of the world is looking dire, people seek for good in the world, desperate for reasons/reminders of why life is worth fighting for.

My own family on both sides of my parents' families were like...front and center during the Vietnam War.

I've never had deep conversations with family members who went through it, but by proxy (especially as a kid) there are countless stories about tenderness, unexpected romance/marriages blossoming despite the dire situations they faced.

Also, the need to belong somewhere/to someone as the world spirals out of control has been well documented as well in the history books.

I know there are situations where people don't fall in love or get caught up in romantic drama or get caught up in sex, but I don't get the need to deny different worldviews/opinions on hypothetical settings.

This. If you think it's the last night on earth, last chance, etc. a lot of people will want to make that count and go out in a time of pleasure and joy, and for a lot of people that's love confessions and sex.

Not everyone of course, but enough that it's certainly not unrealistic to write.

Probably not. And I don't think that it's that unrealistic, though I don't think that this relationships are lasting.
But I am aroace af so for me still it's really abstract. And I had nights there I thought it's the last day on Earth.

there were people found buried alive in ash in Pompeii having sex. I think that says everything

Holy shit, I didn't know that. I know of the many ways they died, and read their shitpost grafitti on the wall for laughs, but that's honestly sad, but human at the same time.

I often joke that Pompeii's findings prove humans haven't changed a goddamn thing, since their shitposts and statement look like something you'd find either on a bathroom stall or the Twatter.

But knowing people spent their last moments having sex, or with their loved ones, is... humanizing. The fact when the end comes, nobody wants to face it alone.

hmm the only times I've really heard this criticism is for something like A Quiet Place, where its more like...why are you making children when you can barely care for the ones you have?

i still don't think that's unrealistic, but i do wonder at the fandoms who are getting your flavor of this.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking Quite Place isn't unrealistic, I believe there are stupid people like that, it's ANNOYING. I just hate this characters sfm

Sorry derailing

I agree with this, but I also think that a lot of narratives are bad a juggling interpersonal storylines with "everything is dire and we're fighting to survive" storylines.

Interpersonal dynamics are my favorite part of most stories, but if the characters are constantly being immature dumbasses because of their feelings, or prioritizing personal shit over other shit that's dire, or literally stopping in the middle of a peak danger-zone to talk about their interpersonal drama, or whatever, then yeah, that's going to piss me off big time.

Just. Don't make the characters stupid. That is literally all I ask. Yes, they can make mistakes sometimes, but those mistakes should be ones where you can very easily see why/how the characters made them. They're allowed to be human, just don't make them morons--especially not when they're in the middle of life and death circumstances.

This.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-13 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly!
It's frustrating and not entertaining to watch morons being moronic. I want to like characters or understand them or hate them for being selfish dicks. Characters doing stupid things for the sake of the plot? Nope
