What seems insane to me is that people are watching their purchasing power dwindle, and a few ambitious little hustlers still somehow assume it would benefit them if the free stuff we all currently enjoy, like fanfic, were lockable behind author-paywalls. The rich are not going to become the OP's patrons, more than likely, and the rest of the world is increasingly unable to afford buying non-essentials.

A lot more people are going bankrupt by frantically trying to start businesses in nonexistent markets than are actually managing to pay their bills that way. But also, the community's got every reason to oppose this, because I can't think of a single instance where commercialization hasn't made fandom more exclusionary. Inevitably. By narrowing who's really welcome here to who's got money they're willing to part with.
