Saving

What things are you currently saving for?

We're having a family reunion next year. And the place we'll be staying at has this really nice spa. So I'm starting to save for that.

Also saving for some dental work.

We have a lot of deferred maintenance on our place. Stuck pocket door, the cats have pulled the intake grate on the air system out of the wall, a cabinet door in the kitchen broke, we want to get rid of the stupid vertical blinds, etc etc. Hopefully we'll hit our savings goal and call a handyman before the end of summer.

Avocado Toast, I need thousands of savings for it. Wait, did I say Avocado Toast? I meant a house. So Easy to get those two confused for some reason.

A dehumidifier for the basement, a re-do on the Monstrous' old room (ceiling, walls, floor, possibly installing a pocket door, definitely installing a ceiling fan), a ceiling fan, a new 'fridge, a new fucking roof (metal for preference).

Fun times!

A 10+ day trip to Berlin, Prague, Krakow, and Vienna. My sister doesn't want to go until after her dog passes. So I've been saving for years. Might take a solo trip to San Fransisco before that if I can get over my fear of traveling alone.

I am struggling to read Fantasticland. I have a couple books on hold on Libby. Slewfoot and Episode Thirteen. The libraries I have access to have gotten several horror novels I've wanted to read for a while.

I just finished reading No Words by Meg Cabot. I hated the last two books in the trilogy and was hoping I’d like this one, but it was just awful. It made me sad ‘cause I used to love her books and I’d always look forward to getting her new ones, but she hasn’t written a book I’ve enjoyed since the last Heather Wells one.

I decided I wasn't feeling depressed enough, so I borrowed 'Cobalt Red,' which is about how all our devices are powered by batteries that are manufactured using a mineral that's primarily mined by children who are paid a pittance and treated like chattel.

Just remember when you step into that electric vehicle: a kid might have died to make it!

Gender Failure by Ivan E. Coyote and Rae Spoon. Its part memoir of their own lives and the 2012 show of the same name that they had performed together.

Most Hated Retail Song

(Anonymous) 2023-08-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by #7, semi-related question. What song are you always hearing at the store and getting irritated by? It can be for serious reasons, because you've heard it way too many times, or just because it's not to your liking.

Re: Most Hated Retail Song

(Anonymous) 2023-08-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Where Have All the Cowboys Gone is probably mine (thread OP), no serious reason at all and I didn't mind the song the first thousand or so times I heard it, but it was featured on the store playlist at two different crappy jobs I did and having to listen to it roughly two or three times a day every day at two places drove me a little nuts. It's one of those songs that sounds way worse through muffled store speakers too.

Re: Most Hated Retail Song

(Anonymous) 2023-08-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's more of a Christmas Hate Song but the only place I hear it now is in retail settings. Last Christmas by Wham. Oh I hate it like lesser men hate Baby It's Cold Outside. Like, it's been a fucking year my guy LET GO. yeah yeah yeah queen longing, gender unspecified pronoun "you", etcetera etcetera. Whatever. This song desperately needs EITHER a BICO style duet about how his ex is super stoked he's found a new love, yay, glad we're still friends OR to not be set on Christmas so it can be just a generic "last time I gave you my heart" and doesn't give us serial killer vibes of all this bitterness for a straight year.

I also dislike that bland "minivan rock" of the early 2000s: dare you to move, higher by Creed, ect.

It isn't time yet, but soon we'll all be subject to the dulcet tones of Noddy Holder screaming "Its Christmas" and singing Merry Christmas at us for two months straight.
