Huh, people who dislike the song usually do so because it's overly sappy or martyr-porn.

I have to say this is the first time I've heard this reason.

I know the compulsive nature of it must be upsetting, but mostly I was thinking how cool that sounded. Now I'm going to take a turn imagining everybody in the world with wings and how awesome that would be.

(SPN and GO fandoms are both pretty good for erotic wing fic - lots of sexy feather grooming and birdlike mating displays and stuff like that)

I hate the song because it's so goddamn condescending. Also, my grandmother was the wife of a well-known preacher who expected her to do nothing that wasn't to his immediate benefit. He made her quit reading novels, he made her quit teaching sewing, and he resented her for sewing at all, even though he did benefit immensely from it, because even when she was making really nice clothes for him, her attention wasn't entirely on him and his needs/wants while she was doing it. And that song always grated on her because all his little underlings/followers/fanboys would play it at just about every goddamn one of their pastors' retreats to "honor" her, and it only ever made her feel like her only value was in supporting her husband, like no one really cared about her beyond what she did for him.

When she died, one of my grandfather's closest friends was trusted to make her memorial video for the funeral. This was a mistake. I remember talking to him about it just before the service started, and I joked that as long as it didn't contain that song, I was sure it would be great. When he said that was exactly the song he'd chosen for it, I was just about ready to stuff his corpse in the coffin with her. That was when I went from strongly disliking the song to flames on the side of my face hating it.

So while I may not hate the song for the same reason as you, OP (and if truth be told, I really like winged people and wish I had wings) rest assured that you are so not alone in your hatred.
