What I want in media and what I want in real life are completely divorced. Media should be entertaining, real life should be just.

The whole point of representation, specifically, is that it's a real-life concern about the way that media works and functions in the real world, not a concern about the way that fiction works as fiction.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Is it entertaining AND diverse? Great! Is it preaching at me and sacrificing entertainment for a lecture? Fuck off.

+100000

This ties in with the Victorian morality shit that annoys the hell out of me. Everything women do, even when we're on our own time and doing something for ourselves (like consuming entertainment), it's supposed to be either improving for us in some way or for someone else's benefit. And yes, it's almost always women and girls that the fandom morality scolding is aimed at.

NAYRT

The actual point of representation is giving media companies a cheap way of claiming they're doing something beneficial, while actually changing as little about their buiness model, profit distribution, and workplace environment as possible. Just hire token whatevers and scoop up the ally cookies, and if it leads to fans eviscerating each other over not liking a character, because no one can criticize it without being accused of bigotry, so much the better. Didn't work with Jar-Jar, but man, that's worked out pretty well for them, since.

So it would be fine with you if all media just happened, by what would surely be coincidence and "just hiring the most talented actors regardless of race etc," to be full of nothing but straight white people? After all, representation has no good intent behind it, so it doesn't matter whether we have it or not, right?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Drip sarcasm and pretend to misunderstand all you want. As far as I'm concerned, the media became much more motivated to entertain women, gays, and blacks as there was more money to be made in it and we had more chances to get the stories we wanted from somewhere else. But we're fools if we interpret that as benevolence or good-heartedness on their part. And worse yet when we're fawning over it and pretending all a movie or TV show has to have is some political message we approve of.

This. So much this.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
representation is important and also, separately, media companies take advantage of it and monetize it like they do everything else

(Anonymous) 2023-08-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think these two notions conflict each other? It's completely possible and fine to still like old media that maybe hasn't aged well because you find it fun or it gives you comfort while wanting new media to do better than before. I kind of feel that's the point when it comes to social change: it gets reflected in the media others create and that's a good thing.

So I think it's silly to feel bad about liking something old because the social culture was different at the time. It's okay to not like something because you don't find it fun, but don't kick yourself over liking the older things you do OP. I'm gay and I still love some of my old het-show faves, lol, because it's all I had at the time if I wanted romance.

I’m fine with stories that just don’t talk about, say, black people. Or stories that attempted to be progressive relative to the time period. But then you get to stuff like a major character talking about burning black people to death, and just NO. (Thanks a bunch, O. Henry!)

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of it also depends on where and when the story is set, too. Like, a TV show set in a small Midwestern town that doesn't have any black characters in it? That's just reality.

A TV show set in a major city that doesn't have any black characters in it? Nah.

The fandom wars I've seen in recent years trying to determined if their ship is righteous enough depending on how morally 'good' and close to being canon they are.

All I can think of is how the 2000s Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh fandoms made me immune to that kind of nonsense. Back in my day, two characters shared a manga panel and would get shipped based entirely on that - or even better, just get shipped because the person making the fanwork said so.
Then there's all the kinkiest toxic relationships - without a tagging system to warn you that the vampire AU that had been chosen was also ankle-deep in piss kink and bondage - that would have made these people burst into flames.

Also a fun one is people getting mortified about multishippers. Sad to see that fandom bicycle is a non-existent term these days.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's not gone, though it may depend which fandoms you're in. Childe in Genshin is one of several popular fandom bicycles in that game. But possibly one of the more well-known ones.

But yeah - with ship wars, moral posturing just makes me roll my eyes extra-hard. There is nothing remotely defensible about insulting real people for preferring other pairings.

Honestly as a queer POC myself I can't stand a lot of media these days because it's so tryhard. It feels like the creators are just ticking off a whole bunch of representation boxes rather than actually putting any sort of real thought into their characters and how they exist in the world.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP

OMGG this 💯

My best friend and I are also queer POC and we've made similar statements about newer media.

It comes off tryhard and so surface level.

Like, it's always, "Oh cool, representation," when we first see it but the execution feels so shallow. Like you said, it just feels like ticking off a list.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it feels like we've gone back to the days of 90s cartoons/kids shows where the main character would always have the black friend and the Asian friend. I actually preferred those because at least they weren't trying to pretend they were doing anything beyond ticking off a list.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, feel you on the "being PoC and [white] people expecting you to care about this." Still not convinced that anyone should.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. Thanks, OP.
