I don't think the problems people have with those things are that they have no suspension of disbelief, actually.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I don't think the frak thing is the same as the fake!Chinese.

[identity profile] staticlights.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The annoying thing about the Chinese in Firefly is that is it horribly mangled. Knowing that it's Chinese, I can understand enough to almost make out what they're saying, but it's a bad sign when Simon's Russian sounds the same as the Chinese (and they also switch between Chinese dialects).

(Anonymous) 2009-06-23 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There's suspension of disbelief and there's suspension of versimilitude. How likely is it that the only changes Mandarin has undergone in the period between today and when Firefly takes place is it sounding like a horrid western accent? Language change doesn't work like that.

And frak just sounds stupid. Either say fuck or do without.

Frak sounds stupid, and people who say frak sound like idiots, it's not a real word, either say fuck or just fucking shut your fucking idiotic mouth, FUCKTARDS.

[identity profile] nicole-anell.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
TV didn't allow them to say fuck. They made up for it in the commentaries, I assure you.

[identity profile] luisa-f.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm talking about the people who use frak at LJ, I understand having to dodge the censors they had to make up the word, but it's LJ, you can say fuck. If you're going to curse then go all the way, don't use fake words.

Seriously, chill! Saying 'frak' may not necessarily be for cussing, but could be a way of identification as a BSG fan. Then there are some who may want to curse but don't like using the word 'fuck'. It's like those who use 'fish' or 'frick' (which isn't a 'real word' either) or some other f-word-variant in cussing. Lastly, it's called personal preference, get with it.

This is why I avoid BSG fantards, so touchy, god help us if someone doesn't like your dear soap opera.

haha scifi cursing...

[identity profile] moosewizard.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
omg I love curse words in science fiction. Some are glorious, some are silly/stupid, but I LOVE THEM. Regarding the ~Chinese~ in "Firefly," I was never particularly fond of it though. "Farscape" did fake cursing like no one else.

It's all about getting it past the censors. If you want to cuss on a TV show, or at least have the spirit of cursing, you can't unless you work around it. If the shows were on HBO or Showtime, sure it's possible, but ABC, NBC, FOX, or even Scifi? Nooooo way.

Random tangent on sci-fi curse words: I read Asimov in middle school (either the Foundation trilogy or I, Robot) and ended up thinking that "unprintable" was meant to be a curse word for years after.

And, um, nice icon.

I read Asimov in middle school (either the Foundation trilogy or I, Robot) and ended up thinking that "unprintable" was meant to be a curse word for years after.

Hahaha, that is epic. Is there any particular reason you associated "unprintable" with cursing? I haven't read either of those books.

And, um, nice icon.

Thank you! I found it was highly appropriate for this post. I just made it this morning to, which made this a very strange coincidence.

Heh. Fitting icon.

I'm still surprised no one has mentioned Transformers, but maybe it's because it's more of a kid's show. And for a kid's show, those writers (especially in the Beast Wars days) had so much fun circumventing what they were and weren't allowed to say on tv. There's the ever-present "slag" and "glitch" and then the more novel, military-type swearing like "Don't just stand there with your pistons in your servos!" (servos here meaning "hands.") Ah, I love it.

I always thought that the "fake" curse words were a bit silly, but certainly not enough to keep me from enjoying a series.

What I'd really be interested in, though, would be "backwards engineering" a society by creating curse words. You know. Fuck is a curse because sex is shameful. Shit is a curse because we have social codes about bodily functions. I always wanted to create a society with completely different social mores, as defined by what are considered "unspeakable" words. You know, go into why those words are taboo and such.

But unfortunately, that would probably be a very boring story and it would be very obvious why I did it ;D

[identity profile] ingriae.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to read it! My favorit sci-fi/fantasy books are the kind that show a society that is fundamentally different from our own - wether it is on a different planet, in the future or another dimension doesn't matter much, as long as it is well thought out and belivable. It's a shame that it's so hard to find books that does it right... and I now have an intense urge to read something with at least a mentioning of a different kind of curse words o.O

In Transformers (Beast Wars and Animated), they tend to use the words "slag" and "glitch" a lot, which make sense for robots. Also, they sound fun.

[identity profile] tigertrapper.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, smeg!

[identity profile] poke-fu.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people that refuse to watch BSG because of the word Frak? I could see being annoyed by it, but refusing to watch is a little extreme.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/radon_/ 2009-06-24 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not even fake Chinese. It's horrendously-mangled Chinese. :P

[identity profile] villainism.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem isn't the use on the shows themselves -- it's the people who use it in real life that get under my skin. I cringe whenever I hear someone use "frak" or "rutting" or "gorrammit" in their everyday speech like it's not totally stilted and begging for attention. It's television, oh my god. Let television be television.

[identity profile] nnaylime.livejournal.com 2009-06-25 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people who don't watch BSG b/c of the word "frak . . ." Really?? color me stunned.
