The grammar=intelligence thing is pretty much universal on the internet. It makes sense, really, since pretty much all anyone has to go by are your words.

I think the grammar=intelligence stereotype is taken out the window though when you take into account that there are several people on the internet who are not speaking their first language on it.

I have several friends who have horrid grammar online because English is not their first language, that does not make them unintelligent.

But since people often don't bother to check/not everyone will state that they are speaking a language foreign to them it leads to those who believe that "grammar=intellgence" to mock those with bad grammar.

I do agree with you there. I was mostly refering to fluent English speakers who don't bother using correct grammar. You know, the kind that use chatspeak, excessive punctuation, and don't bother capitalizing anything ever. Basically, I'm talking about incorrect grammar due to laziness and/or a desire to look "cool." I wish people would be more lenient about honest mistakes.

You can usually tell the difference between the mistakes of someone whose first language isn't English and the mistakes of someone who's just 'lol i spek gud', though. And I've found that a lot of ESL types are far more meticulous about spelling etc. overall than a chatspeaker who just uses lazy typing.

(You rarely get an ESL-er doing chatspeak, but when you do, OH MAN is that the most difficult thing to understand ever. ;_;)

Seconded. I find it quite easy to tell if someone is making an honest mistake - a few typos here and there, usually, and some misspellings and grammar errors - and when someone is just too lazy to do it right - grammar goes out the window ENTIRELY, misspellings vary constantly even for the same word, no respect whatsoever for the rules of capitalization which are generally pretty consistent (and I say this as someone who grew up speaking a language without any capitalization, but really, capitalization? Of all the screwed-up English rules, that one is really not so hard)

What's fun is when you get chatspeak in a different language entirely, which is great fun to watch and try to decipher, impossible as it usually is...
