To be fair, Rufus spent most of Advent Children just kind of standing around and being smarmy, while looking rather pretty.

To any fan that hasn't played the game, he probably doesn't have the same appeal. Whereas honestly, Reno and Rude are less skeevy and crazy in the movie, making them that much more loved by those who haven't played the OG to realize what bastards they actually are.

Is Rufus actually no longer so popular? I hadn't noticed, to be honest, because whenever the fandom disappoints me I go back and reread old fanfiction. I recall Rufus being rather popular earlier on in the fandom, so it's surprising people could abandon him so.

If the Rufus fans are like me, they left the fandom to avoid the sheer masses of fanfics flooding the fandom by people who had only seen AC. I did not like AC (character dismemberment and all), and the amount of fandom wank that it brought, truly bothers me, so I left. That, and I was never big in the fandom itself anyway.

I love the game to bits, and I really wish more people would play it instead of fully relying on AC and scripts.

Huh, I thought he was pretty well-liked in fandom...I'm more or less indifferent to him, but as far as I've seen, I haven't seen any direct hatred directed to him. I don't really hang out much in this fandom anyway, so...yeah XD

I dunno, he just never really appealed to me as much as Reno and Rude. Don't hate him or anything (and I do like pairing him with Tseng, haha!) but he's just not my favorite.

I think, in general, Reno and Rude get more love because they've really got some of the most personality and get the most screentime. But I do remember Rufus and Tseng being quite popular once upon a time. I haven't touched the FF7 fandom in a long time, though, so who knows what it's like now XD;;

I do love Rufus. I think it has a lot to do with people just watching the movie, like someone pointed out above. NOT THAT I'M MAKING ASSUMPTIONS! It just seems to be that way, but I don't know everything about everything!

I just know I like Rufus a lot! I do notice a lack of love for him, though, which is disappointing, but that's all the more reason for you to get out there and make icons right? It just takes practice, even if you aren't an icon maker :)

Well he may not be evil, but he still is a jackass. That's kinda what makes him so awesome and interesting, though -- he's a lot of fun when handled properly.

Reno's my favorite, but I've always loved Rufus. Rufus and the Turks were my favorite characters when playing FF7 back in the day, so I was thrilled to see them get a good amount of screentime in AC.

(I also shipped Reno/Tifa since my first playthrough too, back when I didn't even know what shipping was. And I still ship them!)

This is news to me. I remember when Rufus was really overlooked years ago, but after AC came out there seemed to be a flood of fanworks featuring him. Has that changed? I left the fandom back in 2006 and haven't touched it since, but last I checked Rufus was getting his share of attention.

I never really noticed that. I haven't really touched the fandom much more than fangirling over it with a friend of mine, so I wouldn't really know if Rufus was popular or not. When I did the game, he was such an asshole, but heaven knows an evil asshole tends to win instant points in my book. I only got halfway through before someone decided to delete the file I had, and I haven't had the time to get back to seriously playing it again. Probably after I pass FFXII, I'll attempt to work on FFVII again. [/ramble]

I liked Reno and Rude, but they weren't my favorite characters. Stereotypical as it is, I love my Cloud. What can I say, I have a weakness for guilt-ridden emo characters.
