Are you, by any chance, part of Good Omens fandom?

Because seeing 'Azi' or 'Zira' when no one ever calls Aziraphale that EVER is a minor annoyance, but it's like a thousand pinpricks, after a while it adds up.

Lol Good Omens was the first thing that came to mind when I read this secret. I have a friend that calls him “Azi” when we talk about the show and that doesn’t bug me, but it does bother me in fics.

na

Azi and Azira annoy me so much.

But I’m also annoyed when any character name is different, even if it’s not a nickname. For NBC Hannibal I can’t stand Hannibal calling Will “William”. NO ONE has ever called him William in the course of the show.

OP here

Zira is the BANE of my existence. Like... I do understand shortening to Azi in a tweet where there is a character limit to contend with! I'm really not one hundred percent unreasonable. But oh man, when it's in FIC? In DIALOGUE? I'll backbutton out of something that has promised to hit every button if I see a shortening of his name ONCE.

That's a relatively recent phenomenon as far as I can recall-- of my time in the pre-show fandom back on LJ, I don't remember ever seeing folks shorten it.

(I could not fully embrace the IT fandom, speaking of books by authors I love that got popular adaptations, and this is where I'm gonna say, 'Chee' was a big part of why I hated half the fandom with a burning passion! But I also see it in another fandom where there's a popular fan nickname for a character that, like... makes sense! And if you said 'Oh, X gets called this nickname by their parents', I would buy it, because we don't see that relationship on screen. When you put that nickname in the mouth of friends who we KNOW what they call each other, it's nails on a chalkboard to me)

Yes!

Some people do actually go by their full names and not really by any nickname. And sometimes they go by a particular nickname (Will Riker is not a Bill or a Billy).

Also, they should spell their names correctly - especially if they have that character tag, the spelling is right there. Looking at you Stranger Things fandom - it's Jonathan, not Jonathon, and Erica, not Erika.

And they should also not make up full names. Looking at you Harry Potter fandom - it's Harry, not Hadrian, not Harrison.

Plus, they should use the correct names, if they are known. Yes, sometimes it takes a while for canon to give a character a first name or a last name, and middle names are scattershot at best. But once the canon name is known, fic that gets written after that point should have the correct name and, if not, then at least a better explanation than the writer doesn't like the name. Looking at you Teen Wolf fandom - it's Noah, not John.

Now if the writer explains the reason in the story and it makes sense for the characters in those circumstances, I can sometimes accept it. Or if there's another character *cough*Tony Stark*cough* that would totally give the character all of the nicknames, well, that's another matter.

Re: Yes!

YEAH! YEAH! You get it! A LOT of characters do already use nicknames, and trying to re-nickname them to something else sounds weird and wrong and bad, like they clearly didn't go with that option!

It's fine if one character is an inveterate nicknamer and they pull out new nicknames all the time, yeah, but like... when the author just *likes* a particular nickname and so they have *everyone* use it, when no one in canon does, it's SO weird.

(speaking of Stranger Things, if I ever see Robin being called 'birdie' in a fic again it will be too soon, it makes me gag)

uh, that throws me out of fic too, sometimes i don't even know what character they're talking about until I think about it, and other times, i quite literally grit my teeth.

except cas for castiel in spn. cass is canon but stupid and i do not respect it. which is funny because the fanon spelling definitely came before the canon spelling.

Oh yeah, Cas is so much more correct, like 'Cas' is just a shortening of his name, the extra S is unnecessary! But that's not a whole new nickname, it's just that the fandom has an agreed-upon spelling that the writers did not use.

Apparently it was sort of a writer in-joke/easter egg because castiel is adapted from cassiel, an actual biblical angel, but it's ridic as a nickname for castiel.
