uh. awful lot of us americans who cut our teeth hentai-wise on Bible Black. not sure where any of this is coming from. what, are people calling out the fucking weird kinks that have become mainstream, or the way ahegao is now used in live action porn? (which is gross and stupid imo)

I’ve seen occasional instances of this argument for a while now, but it really blew up recently after someone called Baldur’s Gate 3 an eroge. Several people said eroge are sexist and Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t an eroge because it isn’t sexist, and then a whole bunch of people said the people who said eroge are sexist are racist for saying that. I think there’s some legacy Gamergate stuff where the people who think anti-bigotry leftists want to take away their porn are doing everything they can to argue that anti-bigotry leftists are the real bigots. (Honestly, I think everyone involved in both sides of this argument is some kind of bigot.)

Sounds like a strawman. The kind of people who condemn hentai for being sexist aren't the same people who celebrate sexualized Western works; there are the hentai fans who either don't care about Western things at all or like them too, and there are the feminists who condemn both.

Although if anime as a medium is your main fandom, I guess it's understandable that you'd focus more on condemning hentai. But you wouldn't be celebrating Western works of the same nature, you'd just be saying those are just as bad but they're not a genre in your wider medium of focus, so you don't focus on condemning them as much.

Honestly, I'm inclined to agree with you, OP. In my experience, folks who condemn hentai or eroge for being sexist have barely any familiarity with either genre, and are basing their condemnation off some random example they happened upon [X amount of years] ago.

No genre is totally devoid of sexist examples, of course, but it is so ignorant (like, willfully ignorant) to make sweeping generalizations about any given genre based on one apparently sexist instance. In the case of hentai and eroge, I think anyone who actually wades into either genre will quickly find plenty of examples that ARE just as feminist, intersectional, queer, or generally progressive as their American counterparts.
