Not OP

There is this certain sense that dark, gritty, "realistic" media is automatically superior. A specific sense of snobbery against lighter things.

DC has always had this idea that their heroes are more Iconic than Marvel's and more serious in general due to being icons. Superman and Batman being sort of the premier league of Superheroes who did it all first and better, with Marvel just being lesser copies. Especially with the reputation of Christopher Reeves' Superman movie carrying them. It isn't true, of course, but DC has always low key felt it ought to be.
