I do feel like Batman the Dark Knight was to blame. Even though it was a good movie, somebody responsible for DC movies main takeaway seemed to have been 'Gritty Superhero Movie = Success. Got it!' and let the ball roll down hill after that. It probably didn't help that Watchmen and V for Vendetta came out around the same time with sucess that seemed to cement that idea too.

Yeah, it was highly successful but the dark & gritty parts of it were by far the worst - fridging Rachel, the Joker having "mentally ill minions", the short shrift given to Two-Face followed by that drawn-out, boring hostage scene with Jim Gordon's family. If what they had learned was "get a good but unexpected actor like Heath Ledger and let him go ham", that would have been much better.
