oh man you hit on why I have mixed/ambivalent feelings about it. like other anon said there were a few laughs, but overall the humor fell flat for me. I didn't know any of the actors so I came in without expectations, and I liked it well enough! but I couldn't re-watch it later. it just wasn't as funny on a rewatch, the one-liners stood out painfully.

at least OPs point is still valid, that the original has some of the same flaws. even with my nostalgia glasses (it was one of my top 5 childhood movies) I can admit that some of the jokes never really did land, not in the 80s and not now. but as casts full of SNL alums goes, they did slightly better.

See, I actually was familiar with some of the actors (I'm fond of Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Melissa McCarthy from their time on SNL) so I went into it expecting it to be funny! And then was profoundly disappointed because that particular brand of humor just fell horribly flat for me. Like I said, it wouldn't have been any more funny if the characters had been male, it just wasn't my type of humor in general so I ended up not really enjoying the film.
