I read and leave a lot of comments on fics. I'm always surprised when I find amazing stories without a lot of feedback and I think ultimately it's just bad timing when the story was posted, or the summary wasn't eye catching enough. The quality of the story doesn't translate to comments.

I also think it's a slippery slope relying on comments/kudos to feel adequate about your writing. I think the people who tend to be happiest are the ones writing for themselves first, followed by core friend group.

I also don't trust writers not to delete regardless of how many comments or kudos they have. One of my favorite writers in Star Wars took down all her works, some of which had over 1k comments because the trolls got to her and hounded her out of fandom. Though why she didn't turn off comments all together until they went away/lost interest is another mystery. But the point is she chose to listen to the few trolls in fandom over the thousands of fans that loved her works. She's not the only author that's listened to trolls over the people leaving positive feedback.

+1 You never know when the Claw of fandom is going to find your story, or why that story and not a better one you've written.

The best thing I ever did was add a little code to AO3 that hides the number of hits from me. OOOOF. So much happier with my kudos and comments! They aren't as high as other fics, but who cares? I can't see the ratio of hits to comments or kudos, and since that ratio is always going to be disproportionate, hiding it has vastly improved my experience.

I know I skew hit ratios because I download the fic, load it into Calibre, and then come back sometimes months later to leave feedback. With WIP, I'm not sure if the hit counts go up for each visit, or if there is a cookie that knows it's you and doesn't count your repeat visits. Or I leave stories up in my browser for weeks on end and reload the fics a lot before I have the chance to read them.
