I don’t understand why fans of goth music think they should have a monopoly on “goth” as an identity label. People have been describing things as gothic long before like, Bauhaus was a thing. I have tried goth music and it’s fine. I like it about as much as any music genre, but I’m not much for getting super into any kind of music. I’ve never been to a concert and I can count on one hand the artists I’d consider changing that for, none of which do goth music.
OTOH I have dressed like a stereotypical goth for most of my adult life. I love gothic literature, visual art, basically any media that gets labeled as goth except for the music. Even like the architecture. So it would be really convenient if I could describe my whole deal succinctly without fans of the music genre getting pissy about it.

It's interesting. I think it's more about how goth subculture was born around music. A lot of different subcultures starting point was club/music scene. So of course you can't take from goth scene their music.
Especially since term "gothic" wasn't always the same. I mean architecture was called gothic because it was "barbaric" and not "depressing and dark". Literature was called gothic because at this point great gothic cathedrals became dark and menacing thanks to materials they were made from. Etc

Saying all this. If you feel that you are a goth, it means you are a goth. Don't listen to anyone else.

hmm this is interesting, because i would know goth as an aesthetic before i would ever think of it as music genre. it's so weird how terms just shift.
