The live action version of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day is, imo, by far the superior version of the story. It's just absolutely gutting and has a permanent place on my list of movies to watch when I want to wallow in a good cry.

I wonder how OP feels about the One Piece live adaptation

This was inspired by the complaints about OPLA since the trailers have been released! So many people just circle-jerking about how live action always sucks when they mean that Death Note, Dragonball and Fullmetal Alchemist sucked. Even when the people complaining clearly liked what they saw in the trailers! Very "the raid is failing" energy on that.

I loved OPLA and it exceeded my expectations even after I was already optimistic after the trailers. And I absolutely love all the naysayers now eating their words :D

I feel like this is just the industry in the West. I've been reading translated manga for 20 years and I hate that all the big publishers emphazise their shonen titles most. Like, they figured out a long time ago that most of their readerbase who would actually buy their manga is female (unlike say, the majority boys who would block the floors at bookstores reading the latest Naruto), but since girls will also buy shonen, that combined with the few guys who buy shonen but never shoujo/josei makes shonen their big blockbuster focus. So frustrating.

That's hardly exclusive to the West, though. The biggest selling manga in Japan also tend to be shounen/seinen because like you said, women will also read and enjoy those whereas you don't tend to get that many guys reading shoujo/josei.

Yeah, but at least in Japan they do notice when some shoujo makes a significant enough impact. They get anime, live-action adaptations, tons of merch etc. Meanwhile we may get the anime in the US, but almost nobody promotes it, merch is almost exclusive to etsy, and no one even imagines adapting it for live-action. Notice how Sailor Moon (which isn't even technically shoujo! Just has female main characters that aren't constantly losing items of clothing) was huge in the west and there's never been more than one abortive effort to adapt it here.

DA Sailor Moon is shoujo. It ran in Nakayoshi, a monthly shoujo magazine.

It bugs me too. I know Netflix’s Death Note was trash and all, but there are other live action anime adaptations out there. At some point, it feels like fans want live action adaptations to fail so they can say they were right.

Hell, there have been other good Death Note live action movies!

(Anonymous) 2023-09-05 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, by their definition, there would be no "good adaptations" because what is adapted well is not "good" in the first place.

okay I need recs or examples

My days of watching anime are long behind me. But I really don't remember many good adaptations. I remember Mushishi live action was decent. Oldboy? Maybe Ganz.
So I would like to hear some recs, sincerely. I need things to add to my watchlist

Rurouni kenshin movies and the one piece live action tv show was pretty good. I'd rank the rurouni kenshin movies as the best action/shounen live action adaptation I've ever seen. I heard the bleach movie wasn't bad either though I haven't watched it.

Thanks!
Yeah, OPLA was fun!
Bleach movie was pretty cheesy. I enjoy cheesy things but I wouldn't call it that good.
I would look into Kenshin

I thought the live action Seven Days was very cute!

Thank you! Doesn't look like my thing, but I hope it would be nice rec to someone else (or maybe I will get in the mood)

Thanks for making my secret, secret maker! And I don't know if it was on purpose or a happy accident, but this secret being published the week after the One Piece live action came out is just perfect.
