As a long-time DC fan, ;_____;

I mean, I definitely don't think that was their strategy because that would imply they had a strategy. Someone else pointed out in the last DCEU-related thread here that they kept changing in-production movies based on the reaction to movie they had just released, and yeah. They really had no faith in their own products.

(This is also probably the wrong place to gush about how I saw & loved Blue Beetle last week, but fuck yeah Blue Beetle. Wish we weren't getting Jaime and his adorable family right before the whole DCU reset.)

I just don't think they had a plan which is why their attempts to set up a connected universe didn't work, and tbh I'd have liked the DC movies to be that: movies about superheroes without trying to link them together because there's some DC movies I like but they're the more stand-alone ones.

That being said I don't think they're solely to blame for the complaints about Marvel movies currently, because to me Marvel has hit a samey rut that they don't seem interested in crawling out of. I think they're doing too much and the enjoyment quality has dropped as a result.

HIMYM: Ted. Even though he's the main character, he's terrible.
Buffy: Xander
MCU: Tony is great on his own, but at this point I dislike him in the ensemble because he takes over
Babylon 5: Londo, though I don't hate him, I just don't love him as much as everyone else
LOTR: probably Frodo, but don't hate, and in fact I like him a lot, he's just my least favorite

Pretty open about how much I disliked Tony by Endgame.

I think Scott was one of the most boring main characters on a show. Literally every other character was more interesting.

I was never a fan of Sam on Supernatural. He was so whiny and I did not like his actor.

This. I agree that DC didn't have a strategy, and that was a huge part of their problem. Like you say, they kept changing everything and had no overall plan or direction. (Also, hiring Zack Snyder to make Superman and Justice League movies was a big mistake as well.)

Nevertheless, they did put out some good movies! The first Wonder Woman movie was genuinely good! Aquaman was fun! 2021's The Suicide Squad was excellent! I haven't seen Blue Beetle yet because Covid spike in my city, but I plan to as soon as it comes out on streaming.

Marvel is in a phase of throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks. They've also produced way too much content in far too short a time, with no regard for quality or respect for the IPs and characters they're working with. I've also heard that like Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios is having a difficult time getting top tier talent nowadays when it comes to writers and directors.
