Oh, that's a huge pet peeve of mine as well! AUs are endlessly fascinating to me for precisely that reason; if you're not gonna make the change ricochet in both natural and unexpected ways, why make the change at all?

Feeling old/young

What things make you feel old? What things make you feel like you are still a child?


Old: Realized a kid I used to babysit when I was in high school is getting married.

Young: When I need my mother's help figuring out financial stuff.

I don't seek out fanworks for Heartstopper, but as a person in their 30s I kind of get this secret with THIS show in particular.
I think it's because it's very uhm "innocent", like sexual themes as treated as something a sweet insecure teen would do (not my experience at all, my personal experience with sex was very early and not sweet at all) and not something that incentivize you to look at the lewd parts (like, for example, euphoria-i believe. never watched the show myself). It's all in a bubble of softness with this show. Which I appreciate, mind you. It's strange, but welcomed.

And the actors all look SO YOUNG. I have no idea if it's me getting older and beginning to look at all people in their early 20s as "babies", but everyone in Heartstopper look their intended age and nope NOPE. TOO YOUNG.

I absolutely have no issue of searching sex stuff for teen anime/cartoon characters or IDK Buffy, but for Heartstopper NOPE. NO NO NO.
For me it's getting more common as I age, though. No more shipping with teen characters played by IRL actors in general.

I get being peeved by remakes a bit (I won't watch the remake of Red Dawn because I'm a teen of the 80s thank you), but the original STILL EXISTS.

It's not like you're not going to be able to still watch it and buy merch, Disney Adults.

OMG yes. The number of MDZS fic I've run across where it's a modern AU but they basically redo the entire canon drives me up the wall.

I could never get into it because although it's gay it screams Mormon to me. It's trying very hard to be a world where sex doesn't exist.

There's something of respectability politics about it that I find very off-putting.

Old AND young: helping people with computer issues. Apparently I was born in the sweet spot of computers being ubiquitous but not yet so app-riddled that you had to dig into the metaphorical guts in order to get it to work properly. At work, I have had to show someone older than me how to zip a file and had to explain to someone younger than me how multiple drives start with different letters and they are NOT the same....

SAME.

I don't like ones that swerve wildly away from canon either - but what I want to see is how the change changes canon, not to just re-read canon but by a worse author.

I think in some cases, especially the genderswap, trans/ND 'headcanon', or modern-day ones like that, it's just people doing a y/n with the MC - they experience media by projecting on a character but also project better on a character similar to them, so a re-read of exactly canon but with a slightly different MC *is* all they want. But it is not what I want.

Old:
-This chronic neck/shoulder pain.
-Thinking that people born in 2000 are young adults now.
-Technology in general. I'm stuck in the early 2010s at most. I have a smartphone, but I hate it. My favourite console is my old PSP. I listen to CDs on a CD player. I think the only piece of technology that recently improved and is worth money and changed my life for the better are new eReaders with warm backlight.

Young:
-I still get excited and hyped pretty easily. Not to the point of inviting disappointment (like expecting too much), but to the point of immensely enjoying myself with the simplest things related to my hobbies. I love it.
-Learning new stuff and skills.
-Drawing whatever I want, however I want. Doing ugly ass doodles and laughing at them by myself. Like a child.

Old:

- My godchild turned 18 last month. HOW?
- Waking up in the morning and not feeling refreshed. I want that feeling back. D:
- Related to that: NEEDING at least 7+ hours of sleep to not have a headache in the morning (how do people who drink alcohol deal with hangovers when I already can't deal with this???)
- I'm starting to get scared of falling down, because I know it hurts a lot more now and could potentially do some real damage
- When I craft now I get backpain after a certain amount of time Q_Q
- When I read YA books rooting for the parents lol (ofc only when they're not truly shitbags)
- The realization that I am, in fact, mortal and the anxiety that comes with it
- Tiktok in general

Young:

- I'm still very much into fandoms and everything that comes with them
- Listening to older people talk about politics (especially my parents these days like... holy shit, I swear they were much more liberal years ago????). I realized that I'm still faaaar more often on the side of ~the youth
- When my way younger cousins tell me things they don't tell their parents
- very banal: people thinking I'm younger than I actually am
