Feeling old/young

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-09-17 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What things make you feel old? What things make you feel like you are still a child?

Old: Realized a kid I used to babysit when I was in high school is getting married.

Young: When I need my mother's help figuring out financial stuff.

Old AND young: helping people with computer issues. Apparently I was born in the sweet spot of computers being ubiquitous but not yet so app-riddled that you had to dig into the metaphorical guts in order to get it to work properly. At work, I have had to show someone older than me how to zip a file and had to explain to someone younger than me how multiple drives start with different letters and they are NOT the same....

Are you an elder millennial, by chance? This is me with some of the boomers and (older) gen x-ers I work with and some of the younger millennials/gen zs. Older and younger people who want to know how computers were of course figure it out and even master it (I mean, the switched on older people are the people who invented them, after all) but In My Day we had to know how it worked in order to be able to use it.

Yup. Ahh, the good old days of being on the slowest internet in the world, and then hearing a crackle through the speakers as it dropped out because someone in the house picked up the phone.

LOL I'm also an elder millennial and this is SO true.

I've found that my nephew and his friends (11ish) are actually worse at computers that I was at that age. They just have way more exposure with tablets/phones. It is crazy.

Kids and younger adults, like early 20's, have a lot of exposure and use of smart-phones and tablets, but almost none with actual computers. It's wild because I'm in my 30's and not the youngest at my work by far, but I've had to routinely teach the 20-something receptionist how to do what I consider to be very basic computer stuff because it wasn't something she was ever taught at school. It's such a weird generation difference because I thought kids younger than me would be way better at tech than I am, but a lot of them are worse if it's not editing pics on phones. It's wild.

Indeed, this.

At my former job I kept hearing "wow, you're so fast at typing!" from younger and older people, because most people were either way older or way younger. And I was like "heheh... yeah... (blame it on MSN Messenger)" every single time.

AYRT

Star Trek trivia in an AOL chat room for me! Gotta get fast to win.

It’s a really bizarre feeling when you have to show both your older and younger coworker how to save a Word document or how to clear their cache. And they both marvel at how fast I type (thanks to all the fanfic I wrote back in the day).

Old:
-This chronic neck/shoulder pain.
-Thinking that people born in 2000 are young adults now.
-Technology in general. I'm stuck in the early 2010s at most. I have a smartphone, but I hate it. My favourite console is my old PSP. I listen to CDs on a CD player. I think the only piece of technology that recently improved and is worth money and changed my life for the better are new eReaders with warm backlight.

Young:
-I still get excited and hyped pretty easily. Not to the point of inviting disappointment (like expecting too much), but to the point of immensely enjoying myself with the simplest things related to my hobbies. I love it.
-Learning new stuff and skills.
-Drawing whatever I want, however I want. Doing ugly ass doodles and laughing at them by myself. Like a child.

Old:

- My godchild turned 18 last month. HOW?
- Waking up in the morning and not feeling refreshed. I want that feeling back. D:
- Related to that: NEEDING at least 7+ hours of sleep to not have a headache in the morning (how do people who drink alcohol deal with hangovers when I already can't deal with this???)
- I'm starting to get scared of falling down, because I know it hurts a lot more now and could potentially do some real damage
- When I craft now I get backpain after a certain amount of time Q_Q
- When I read YA books rooting for the parents lol (ofc only when they're not truly shitbags)
- The realization that I am, in fact, mortal and the anxiety that comes with it
- Tiktok in general

Young:

- I'm still very much into fandoms and everything that comes with them
- Listening to older people talk about politics (especially my parents these days like... holy shit, I swear they were much more liberal years ago????). I realized that I'm still faaaar more often on the side of ~the youth
- When my way younger cousins tell me things they don't tell their parents
- very banal: people thinking I'm younger than I actually am

Old: My seemingly constant congestion. My occasionally sore back. Explaining the world before 9/11 to my nephew.
Young: Staying up super late one weekends. Being heavily involved in fandom still.

I don't really FEEL old until I have to measure time since something (when I was your age, when that movie came out, when that album came out, the last time I did Thing) and it turns out in decades, not years. The 20, 25, 30, and 35 markers are gross, I'm not looking forward to being able to say "40 years ago I..."

Same as Anon right above, really; I mostly feel (in my head, to myself) about 18 or 20. I only feel OLD when I'm really confronted with the fact that I am, in fact...old.

Realizing my daughter is nearly 30 did that, too.

Old: The thought of an all-night bender is horrifying rather than exciting, I wear earplugs to the movies, all concerts, and whenever I go to go to a bar with music. (Admittedly I always wanted to do this, I'm just at the point I care more about my hearing than looking cool to my peers.)

Young: I still get excited about new media and travel; I've noticed many of my same-aged peers have straight up stopped listening to new music, only watch new shows if they're similar to things they already like (if not outright reboots/remakes), and won't do trips that are even slightly adventurous anymore.

Big mood re: financial stuff. I feel like I never was taught how to handle stuff like "picking an insurance company" and it's still something that 'my parents are supposed to handle.'

I always feel old nowadays because of things I liked as a kid being from 30 years ago, but my younger sister and I were walking along the boardwalk the other week and she bought a fried dough and couldn't finish it and gave it to me, and then I couldn't finish it either, and being unable to finish junk food like that is a completely different 'oh god we're old' kind of realization. We can still clearly remember a time where we could each eat an entire one, and that time is gone forever.

Watching Tiktoks makes me feel very old and weary. (I'm not even on Tiktok but the videos get crossposted a lot so I still occasionally see them.)

Old:
- songs I used to listen to in high school are part of the “oldies/classics” listing on radios
- my lower back pain
- the realisation that little to no one uses fake names on the internet anymore to protect their identity, or protects their identity at all

Re: Feeling old/young

(Anonymous) 2023-09-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I feel old whenever there's a post or video about "nostalgic" shows or has a title like "Click to remember your childhood!" and it's all things that premiered when I was in college or later. And it's almost all of them that are like that. I guess nobody makes those things for gen x or millennials, it's just an assumption that everyone in fandom is a zoomer.

I feel young when my coworkers talk about their adult kids, although I'm getting to the age where it would've been possible for me to have kids who are grown up by now, if I'd had any.

Old: People not knowing the difference between free-to-air channels and cable channels

Re: Feeling old/young

(Anonymous) 2023-09-18 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
The more I live, the more I realize how little difference there is between "being old" or "being young" if you're not hitting the milestones like "drive", "marry", "have a kid", "get a promotion" or "buy a house". I was an older soul at 10 than I am now which is scary. The freedom I give myself now makes me feel younger than I felt when I was young. And being able to spoil myself with fandom goods I couldn't have back then is fun.

What makes me feel old... being online? A bit scary to realize my fandoms are now "old people fandoms" and most kids would think I'm too old for fandom.

Old: The kids I used to babysit are either starting college or about to graduate
I’ve got back and knee pain and I’m always tired
I’m starting to get gray hairs
When I talk about certain anime at cons, chances are good that the younger crowd have never heard of them (went to a con recently and only one person I talked to knew about YuYu Hakusho)

Young: I get really excited over silly stuff
I love dancing and can outdance most people
I still call my parents when I need advice

Teenagers these day don't understand fully what it means to 'change the channel', 'hang up the phone' and 'roll up/down the window'.
