So much about the US system is so frustrating. Being expected to be at work even when you are sick because you are out of sick days is one of those things that wouldn't fly in most other countries. Can we stop pretending we're the best in the world?

Big boss sent me home today because I have strep (plus a sinus infection) and only just started the antibiotic. But I have to be back at work tomorrow, even feeling miserable, because after 24 hours of the antibiotic I'm technically no longer contagious.

It drives me nuts how much coming into work sick is required and incentivized. I saw a great employee get fired from my workplace earlier this year because of honestly reporting illness and getting one too many absence points, even though the alternative would have been to lie and put our coworkers and customers at risk. Our absence policies and probation periods can be very harsh.

Yup. And my office in general is a nice one. The system here is just so fucked up.

"Being expected to be at work even when you are sick because you are out of sick days is one of those things that wouldn't fly in most other countries."

Japan is even worse. Unless you have one of the illnesses that requires absence (COVID or the flu and a couple other, rare ones) you're expected to be at work even if you have sick days.

... you don't, though? You just need a doctor's note, or at least that's been the case for every job I've ever had.

We have a set number of sick days and a set number of vacation days. Once they are used up we have to show up.

Huh, weird. Even my retail and food service jobs would make exceptions if you had a doctor's note, because they didn't want people coming in sick to work and potentially infecting everyone else.

LMAO. That has NOT been my experience. And I worked in food service.

My last food service job would flat-out send you home if you came in sick. They did NOT fuck around with that, LOL. Show up sick? Nope, you're not getting anywhere near the food.

da

I've worked somewhere that does that. You aren't allowed to come into work if you're sick... but then you get punished with an absence violation. So ridiculous.

My managers sure as fuck didn't care if they thought we were shortstaffed and would berate you if you tried to stay home. And why not. They were already fucking the customer out of their money, why would they care about their health?

At my workplace we can have 6 unplanned absences in a year. Once you go over 6, you have to go on an "attendance plan" which basically means that if you put one toe out of line, you're fired. It's up to how much your boss likes you as to whether or not one unplanned absence is each day you're out sick (regardless of doctor's note) or each sickness regardless of length.

So if your boss sucks, and you're out for the flu for three days and then out for covid for three days in the same year, you could get fired, doctor's note or not.

The US banking system makes no sense.

Nobody answers the damn phone or calls you back when you leave messages in doctor's offices.

Man every time someone complains about stuff like this I am so thankful for mine. I leave a message? The doctor herself is calling me back. I need an appointment? She can fit me in in a few days.

If he is sitting on your tail, he is just Smokey Bear, good buddy. Just watch out if Smokey Bear is also a Texas County Mountie, you hear?

So tired of being pissed off at stupid shit all the time. So tired of worrying about next year, knowing I need to have plans in place and having zero idea wtf to do or how to start. I just wish for the future (and the present to an extent) to not fucking suck.

Still super passed off over this lady at work who restarted the computer I was working on even though she wasn't supposed to even be on the floor and there are like 5 other computers and 8 tablets she could have used.

Just because I'm not standing in front of the computer, my WORK PROGRAM was clearly on display and I was 6 feet away performing the tests before tracking them in. Bitch fucking knew what she was doing.

Just a rude entitled bitch.

I already spoke to my supervisor about the incident and I'm going to talk to her lead about it.

I'm so fucking sick of people at work just doing whatever they want and I should just be OK with it. <-

That happened to me a few times. They were actively trying to harass me but I didn't know ; ultimately I quit. But I truly have no idea why people are like that. I'm doing my job, I need the money like everyone else. You're ruining my work for the company because you don't like me as a person? wtf?
