As someone who doesn't do Discord I don't even know "how to fandom" anymore. Haven't known for maybe 5 years. I went from forums to Livejournal to Tumblr to Twitter... but if the wind is blowing to Discord guess I will be staying here + enjoying things in my bed.

Same, for me it was zines, mailing lists, livejournal, dreamwidth, tumblr, I don't use Twitter fannishly and now it's really just Dreamwidth and AO3. Discord seems overwhelming like the worst parts of mailing lists + twitter and just it seems the only place to connect with a wider audience. Lots of A03 authors getting all the kudos and comments because they've built up a Discord audience who hang on their every word.

AYRT - The reason why I didn't name mailing lists (or IRC) is exactly "never liked them". Discord does give me the same impression. I got used to Twitter because I had been tweeting for a long time when it became the go-to fandom place, but my experience was more on the "locked account to talk to 5 fandom friends" side of things. I enjoy AO3 but not the community aspect. When it comes to the community aspect I haven't been able to adapt since maybe the forum days. Everything is overwhelming and disorderly. Can we bring topics back, please?
