...was it homophobic at any point in time? Other than censoring "gay" (but then again, it was a kids website, they'd also censor sex and mentions of romance iirc. sad that I got my account frozen over that lol)

Censoring "gay" and claiming it is for kids sake is homophobic. It is a classic form of homophobia.
