Re: Do you block people who say ignorant/bigoted/awful things?

Well, I try to engage in conversation if I think there's hope the other person is capable of understanding. But frankly, if there's nothing indicating that person is open to a dialogue that isn't just them spewing haterade then I might just block them. I tend to do it more with obvious trolls and don't feel guilty.

I feel mixed on folks I know IRL or even acquaintances on the internet. I try to start from a place where I think people ARE reasonable. But I prefer to start from a place that won't put them in the default position of super defensive, even if that's not my responsibility. Because while I'm not really interested in controlling others or fully convincing anyone of my position, I at least want to strive to make them aware that something they say is hurtful or just not cool. Then it'll be in their head, even if they do get defensive.

As for your uncle, I mean, there's nothing weak or strong about blocking people on the internet. It's just blocking. You don't owe trolls and emboldened bigots the time of day, much less the luxury of you even acknowledging them or their shitty views.
