1) I think she is deserving of the criticism she has garnered

And

2) She is deserving of being given another chance to prove that she made a bad decision and then backtracked because she realized the error in her choice

Like, how long can one hold onto their resentment?

Given Drew Barrymore's reputation in the industry she is deserving of being given some grace.
If some don't want to extend it to her, that's on them.
I do look at her with more scrutiny now.
Never surprised when people do shitty things but it's good when they apologize and actively work to do better (rather than double down on their shitty behavior).

i mean, i think of all the celebrities who royally fucked up...you're far from the only person racing to say this about her. people were calling for clemency immediately, and "we should be thrilled when people do the right thing!" was the main social media convo the day after she backed down, lol, to the point where it was annoying, and was clearly more about fan coverage than any philosophical principal.

also...backing down wasn't an idiot thing to do at all. all of these celebrity talk show hosts have to get celebrity guests, and "no one is going to go on your show" is, you know...not good for her show. if what i think is true, which is that the studio said "come back or we're cancelling" then frankly this sequence of events was the only way she could cut that gordian knot anyway.

Not principal, but principle.

Maybe I'm missing some nuance here, but I am not going to think of her as a scab, because as far as I understand she has agreed not to be a scab. That's good enough for me.

What I wonder about people who do this and then walk back their decision... did you not know this would get you labeled a scab and come with lots of criticism and negative attention? How could you NOT know this, when you're in the entertainment business? I was surprised Barrymore made this choice since she's an actress herself, from a famous acting family. She's got to be more than a little acquainted with the history of strikes and the reason why they're doing it now, and be more well informed than the average Joe. So what happened re: the bad decision making?

Call me cynical, because I'm happy when people realize they screwed up, apologize and then change their minds. But it's like... are you doing that because you honestly thought everyone would be cool with you crossing the picket line, or were you testing the waters to see if you could get away with it, and once you found out that uh oh, people noticed and are mad at you, THEN you break out the tearful apologies?

Either way, I wish her better luck in the future, but ouch.

In Barrymore's case, my theory is that doing the show was really important to her psychologically, and so she didn't think through the whole thing.

In Maher's case, he's just a full-on fucking asshole piece of shit, fuck him.

I think she doesn't have as much money as everyone thinks she does. I also think she was being forced to go back to work.

they contractually have to provide a certain number of shows and if they don't start the season by a certain date they are in violation of their contract, so yeah, she was in a hard place since she was producing her own show. I don't know what her financial situation is, though. I'm glad she backed down though because look! The WGA strike is almost over after all.
