Question I've been wanting to ask since yesterday, after noticing many anons considered themselves to be the sole member of their rarepair's fanclub. Do any of you feel like sharing your rarepairs, or your proud achievements? (like "they have 15 fics on AO3 and I wrote 14 and the last one was inspired by my fic") I'll share mine in a bit.

My first rarepair was Glenn/Cyrus from this SNES JRPG called Chrono Trigger. Glenn is a playable main character and he gets an entire chapter explaining how he got his current form (a frog's) because he was weeping on Cyrus' body after he was killed by a villain instead of running away like Cyrus asked him to. Cyrus was a "big brother" figure to him, "my mentor" "my only friend" "the person who inspires me" and protected him and all that. I was pissed off when I realized there were more fics involving Glenn and said villain than Cyrus. WTF. The game gives us an entire Glenn-loved-Cyrus(-as-a-friend,-sure)-focused chapter AND time-traveling shenanigans for what? 1 one-sided fic on FF.net, 1 4-line drabble on AO3 was all we had until 2019. The people who wrote the three fics they got since 2019: heroes

My current rarepair is annoying me to bits, Jebrael/Tirzad from Genshin Impact - so if you ever see a madman preaching about it, ntmy. I thought it was so obvious I stopped screencapping their bickering halfway into the quest because I was 100% sure someone else would have done it before me since I was almost a year late. The hottest hunk in Genshin so far and the Akademiya twink he travels with? Who happens to be a relative of the Love Of His Life (also an academic he traveled with)? And also questions if his daughter was a "result" of their research ("you know other men")? Yes, everyone hates Tirzad, but a total of 0 fic or art is still less than I expected. I'm probably not going to be the one to write it, just wanted to complain.

Now for an amusing story in which I was the hero. I got into a popular shounen in the early 2010s and felt a little "hMmMmMmM" about this rarepair. Wrote very low-stakes fluff. To this day I get comments on it because even now this ship only has 4 fics on AO3.

Anyway, please share your stories and make me feel like I am not alone.

I didn't play Chrono Trigger until the DS rerelease, but I LOVED the Glenn/Cyrus backstory and shipped it so hard. Never looked at the fandom for the game, though.

Oooooh thanks for making me feel less alone!! Once in a while I check if there are any new fanworks and (was super happy to find out there were a couple in the past few years, but usually) get surprised that people still don't see it.

I shipped Galadriel/Sauron in a semi-cracky way before Rings of Power. I think there were like two of us who shipped. Now everyone ships, but honestly I don't ship it in the Rings of Power version at all.

Ouch. Can't remember when I last felt that feeling of "I liked it, then this thing happened, now everyone likes it and I don't like it anymore" but I know how it is and it sucks.

It actually has happened to me more than once where something becomes canon (though it didn't in this case) and suddenly the dynamic doesn't work for me. Tonks and Remus back when I was into Harry Potter. House and Cuddy. Bones and Booth.

When I ship, I often ship with a specific dynamic. And seeing a different dynamic can completely ruin a ship for me.

Yeah, this. Sometimes the canon is just not as good as whatever we were imagining before.

The Rings of Power version is weird because they're both really hot in that version (*especially* Galadriel) (like, really really really really really REALLY hot) but I still kind of hate their dynamic and wish there was something else going on.

Yup. When I shipped, it was in a hate sex kind of way where he becomes obsessed with her while he's Annatar precisely because she isn't into him and he simply doesn't understand how anyone could not be into him. In canon, she doesn't figure out who he is, but she's extremely suspicious of him. So that's the dynamic I want, not one where she's completely fooled.

Not to mention, a lot of the Rings of Power shippy fics come with mentions of Melkor/Sauron and insisting that Melkor abused Sauron. Trying to make Sauron more sympathetic. And I really, really, really hate that idea.

Michael/Alex from The Big Chill was mine! Though at least I had one friend to get into it with me. Those who remember seeing The Big Chill may recall that Alex is dead the entire time, and that it's kind of integral to the plot.

My super rarepairs from Buckaroo Banzai and St Elsewhere both had exactly one other person who independently shipped and wrote fic before I did, plus the friend(s) I could drag in.

Currently the ONLY person-- SOMEHOW-- who considers Ned and Lucky the superior Three Amigos ship and have been hoping OMitB fans might be swayed, the way Good Omens fans got into Bright Young Things, except instead of not appearing on screen together despite having a flirty moment in the book, Ned and Lucky have a duet/dance number where Ned briefly steps into the role of love interest, and a lot of fond gazing during another song, and I do feel like if you're sold on the old man chemistry in OMitB that's built on nearly forty years of friendship, it's actually really something to go back to the movie where they *met* and see how much the chemistry is already there.

Ahh yes, the supportive friend who'll not only listen to you preaching but also join the choir. Gotta love that!

That sounds fun. Best of luck, anon! I feel like I may have watched that movie when I was too young to ship anyone (kid me really liked Steve Martin ...) so this makes me want to watch it (again?).

Kid me also really liked Steve Martin, so I wasn't *expecting* to come out of an adult rewatch with a ship in my heart...

(and also a desire to rewatch a bunch of other old Steve Martin movies-- I really loved The Man With Two Brains, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels... Roxanne, which is my mom's favorite.)

Yes! Left on the cutting room floor, except for a shot of his arm as a corpse... but knowing he was cast means I have a set image in my mind and an idea of his voice.

I have no achievements, but I still ship Bishop/Roenick from the Assault on Precinct 13 remake like burning.

I know some people ship my rarepair because there is a fic for it, and it has lots of comments thanking the author for writing the ship because it needs more love. But I don't like but the fic because it villainizes the canon love interest of one of the characters. (Fandom's too small for me to want to name, sorry.)

Ouch. Worse than having no fics is having ONE fic you dislike that happens to dictate the entire fandom's views on the ship :(

I seem to be the only person on the planet (or at least in the FFXIV fandom) that ships m!Azem/Hythlodaeus for all the art I can find of it :/ I like Hades/Hyth, I prefer all three of them as a throuple, but sometimes I'm in the mood for just Azem/Hyth and it's just... nonexistent. Makes me sad. :( I try to do gposes for them but never get much reaction.

I also used to be a weirdo shipper in Tales of the Abyss days, I had a lot of rarepairs. Peony/Dist springs to mind, but there were at least a few who liked that (I actually liked the Keterburgers in basically any arrangement, with Dist/Nephry and Jade/Nephry being the rarest lol), and I liked Luke/Anise a lot from a fluffy ship perspective. I was also always surprised that Legretta/Tear wasn't more popular.

Shakes your hand in Peony/Dist and in Keterburg Krew arrangements, tbh. I still ship all those.

No idea about FFXIV but TotA had a LOT of interesting ships. Jade is such a fandom bicycle I don't blame you for that lol.

He really was, haha. One thing I really appreciated about the fandom as a whole was that ship wars were pretty isolated to just a few of the juggernauts (Guy/Luke vs. Guy/Asch, etc), but even those were usually chill towards the rarepairs.

I ship Seelah/Arue from Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous. This is somewhat of a problem because Arueshalae is hands-down the most popular character for the PC to romance and Seelah is an Iconic Pathfinder character who is not romanceable. They're just so sweet to each other! So supportive and kind! I want them to SMOOCH <3

So there is no fic or art and I am not good at writting fic or making art but we'll see what I can do.
