Shower thoughts

Share yours here.

I'll start: Omegaverse might have officially started in the Supernatural fandom but if you think about it, isn't it essentially just Sentinel/Guide AUs with added dog dick and heats?

Omegaverse is to Sentinel/Guide AUs what Fifty Shades of Grey was to Twilight.

Interesting take. I honestly took omegaverse as intense gender politics x 1000 + dog dicks lmao. That take is mostly influenced by all the dystopian AU's I've read tho which really emphasized how fucked up it could be.

Sentinel/guide stuff to me was just soulmate shamanism + what animal are you? buzzfeed quizzes.

AYRT

I'm thinking of the really intense Sentinel/Guide AUs where Sentinels were known and there were whole government programs matching Sentinels to Guides. The Guides were usually treated as second-class citizens and essentially slaves to the Sentinels. They were AUs within the Sentinel fandom itself, I don't remember if the trope had its own name though.

Not even a shower thought but something between a secret and a 50-pages-long megathread rant I'm trying not make.

Why has omegaverse become the standard for Japanese BL? It boggles my mind that in 10ish years Japanese BL went from being almost mainstream to almost obscure, and I feel like omegaverse is related to that. Nowadays if you check the BL awards (the ones that get published on chil-chil.net) in Japan I'd say maybe 50% of the works are omegaverse. I still love the ones that aren't, but I don't touch omegaverse with a ten-foot pole.

When I ask for BL comics recs nowadays, I mostly get manhwa or Western webcomics. I like that there's more variety nowadays, but I still tend to prefer Japanese style BL so it makes me wonder what's up with all the omegaverse.

Yo nonny, sameee. I was startled at all the omegaverse that was there.

Tbh, the little amount of BL japanese comics I've read weren't to my taste. Like, most of them seem to devolve into horny boinks and or rape and just weren't well written. At least the popular ones at that.

On the other hand, the GL/Yuri is just loads better in quality and writing.

It's kind of strange when I think on it.

AYRT here, yes I feel you because even I was startled at the transition and I have been reading/following Japanese BL releases for what, 15+ years? I keep saying I seldom like the #1 ~ #3 popular series but love the #4 ~ #6 so I get what you mean. The most popular series are often just weird. But I’m not sure that’s exclusive to manga (see: Killing Stalking?) I like a lot of almost-very-popular Japanese BL comics so feel free to lmk your fav themes/kinks if you want recs.

I like your thinking. I do disagree though - I think it's an amalgamation of a few different classic fanfic tropes. Sex!pollen (ie forced sex/attraction) is one of them, and mpreg is another (when breeding is involved - though mpreg also often plays heavily on gender dynamics which you can see coming through in omegaverse). When it's romantic it's usually mixed with soul bonds (which I see Sentinel/Guide being a subgenre of, even if IIRC S/G was popular before soul bonds became big). If it's not romantic it veers a bit closer to BDSM AUs (also a popular Sentinel trope).

What I think is most original about omegaverse is the animalistic elements (including, yes, the knotting), and the super heavy play gender dynamics.

That's IMHO, anyway.
