I don't think I've ever seen it used for racebends, so I always thought it was a useless tag because... I already know what races the characters in this canon that I'm reading fic about because I know and like them are, I don't need a tag to remind me of what's canon ?

But Secret 1 here is a reminder to me that not everyone reads fic only for canons they know, and I guess some people might search the tag because they just want to read about POC no matter the fandom. Different people do fandom differently.

Oh, also, it doesn't always mean black, often times it means "character from an anime set in Japan with all Japanese characters" and I find that silly because it's a stretch to consider a character who wasn't "written as a POC" to be one. (As Japanese people don't think of themselves as POC because they're the default, privileged racial majority where they live) I suppose this would apply to cdramas, Bollywood etc. too.

da and I also hate it when they use the tag on darker-skinned characters from fantasy canons that don't have Earth races because it's the same situation of "these characters weren't written as POC if the racial politics in their world are different."

Yes! I have a dark-skinned fave in a fantasy canon where the racial discrimination operates on a completely different axis. Seeing a fic about him with tags drawing attention to the inclusion of a "PoC character" was more jarring than I expected.

Exactly. I'm a fan of a fantasy canon where, similarly, racial discrimination exists, but it has absolutely nothing to do with skin color, so calling the characters who have dark skin "POC" is just stupid because they aren't treated any differently than the characters who have lighter skin.
