I sometimes feel like maybe my standards are a LOT lower than everyone else or I am much easier to please LOL!

Like, I've read 83 books this year, all new to me, and out of them, 2 were 2-stars, and everything else was 3 and above which in my brain is (I enjoyed this, I had a good time).

The two 2-stars, one was just... it had an AMAZING premise but the writing was up its own ass so much, and the second was an exciting premise but every other sentence was a simile (and also the weird incest vibe that no one seemed to address at all lol!).

Care to share some recs?

I mean, you gotta help your fellow readers out.

DA - my 5 star recs for books from this year and last year, an incomplete list

  • Translation State - Ann Leckie
  • Lone Women - Victor LaValle
  • The Tea Ladies - Amanda Hampson - murder mystery set in Sydney, Australia

Novellas

  • Ogres - Adrian Tchaikovsky - third in series, works as standalone
  • Nothing But the Rain - Naomi Salman
  • Lost in the Moment and Found - Seanan McGuire. This is part of a longer series, which I find patchy; works as a standalone
  • Into the Riverlands - Nghi Vo - part of series, works as standalone

Another DA

Ann Leckie and Adrian Tchaikovsky are almost always wins for me, and they both have a decent amount of stuff out.

AYRT

Haha, fair enough, but like I said, I may just enjoy more because my standards are lower/I'm easily pleased! xD

5 Star reads from 2023 so far:

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak
All three Scholomance novels by Naomi Novik
The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by FC Yee
Raybearer/Redemptor Duology by Jordan Ifueko
Six Crimson Crane's/Dragon's Promise Duology by Elizabeth Lim
A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow
Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas (fyi this ends in a cliffhanger and I don't believe book two is out yet, I am dying)
Heaven Official's Blessing: Volume 1 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
Russian Roulette by Anthony Horowitz (#10 in the Alex Rider series but can be read without reading the rest of the series as it's a side-story of a non-main character)

4.5 Star reads from 2023 so far:

Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola (lost half a star for the annoying third act break up which I loathe lol)
The Murder Between Us/The Grave Between Us Duology by Tal Bauer
The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
Forgotten Monster by J. Emery
How Not to Marry a Prince by Megan Derr
The Screaming Staircase by Johnathan Stroud
White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson
From the Dark We Came by J. Emery
Dead Things by Stephen Blackmoore
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Blackwater (graphic novel) by Jeannette Arroyo, Ren Graham

My only two star reads for 2023 so far; including these because the reviews are VERY divided for both lol, so maybe it's just a matter of I personally not liking them:

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas
The Christmas Murder Game by Alexandra Benedict

I'm the other anon who said in the main thread that books are still good, but I have to say out of the only things I've read on these lists, both are ones you gave 5 stars (Scholomance and Sunbearer Trials) and both I would only give 2...

Haha, honestly, this is why I never take reviews of books/movies into consideration before I read or watch something, because peoples' tastes are SO varied, that some peoples' one stars are someone else's five stars and vice versa.

Also, looking at my taste in movies, there's the distinct possibility I have absolutely NO taste lol!

And to be fair, 5 star for me doesn't mean 'perfect, no notes'. Like I definitely had a few comments/issues with the Scholomance series, but nothing that stopped me from enjoying it/wanting to read it again.
