Re: What hobby do you wish you could into?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-01 06:08 am (UTC)(link)I do know how to play chords on a guitar, I got that far, but the thing that ended up killing it hobby-wise was not knowing where to go from there. like, was I going to start a band? no. was I going to learn lead guitar with solos and all of that? no, I'm not that competent (I have a hard time getting my hands to perform two independent tasks. forget adding things like singing!). with piano you can at least occasionally find an unattended instrument in a lobby and fritter a bit at some old Bach etude and people go ohhh nice and clap and you feel good. Singing, too, there are a lot more opportunities to use that even just for fun and not profit. Guitar? If you can't find the discipline or the muscle memory/talent to do something like classical performance pieces, it's utterly useless. I played an open mic night with two other people exactly once and was utterly mortified, there was no way I could form a band or play other sessions with my rudimentary rhythm guitar. it has a high price of admission, too - you can read books and watch tutorials, but there are very few opportunities to buy a guitar with which to practice for a cheap price and then never do anything with it. My Epiphone was $350 back in 1995 and that was still considered cheap, I can't imagine what the entry bar is now.
At least it's not even more utterly useless like playing bodhran. I learned that 20 years ago! Have I ever found an Irish music session to sit in on? No, no I have not. At least that one I could pick up and practice with a cardboard box, never had to invest in a drum.
