How many people here are old enough to remember Usenet?

Did you post, or just lurk? Man, those were wild times. I'm not saying there weren't trashfires back in the day, but one thing to keep in mind is that there were a LOT fewer people actively using the internet back then and that tended to keep the number of trolls and riffraff down compared to now, where it's super easy to get online and immediately gain access to a platform of millions of other people.

I did a college paper on the construction and usage of Klingon by going to Usenet and polling members of the tlingon-hol page. Got an A and my linguistics professor was so fascinated he became my advisor from that point on.

Also, there were more moderators and group members were strongly encouraged to killfile the assholes instead of engaging.

I’m old enough to remember it but my family was far too poor to own a computer so I never used it. Everyone I knew used Compuserv and IRC by the time my family had a computer when I was in my late teens. AOL came along shortly after and lots of my channel jumped to that but still used IRC and then we all started migrating to LJ.

Oh, I definitely remember Usenet. I also remember the early search engines like Netscape. It seems like a century ago.

Now, of course, Twitter/X has turned into something resembling Usenet, only without all the alts. and whatnot. There are just hashtags, and its own search engine, to find topics now...
