LOL no, FS is dying because the demographic that still uses DW isn’t as excited or invested in fandom anymore. Most of the active FSers of ten years ago aren’t even in fandom anymore and the fans that came later got their start on Tumblr or Twitter.

We’ve been maintaining around the same level of engagement for YEARS. And the secret makers are a huge part of the community’s endurance, we’d be lost without them or Case. But you’re kidding yourself if you think that if people engage the way you want them to, FS will magically explode with activity.

This is it, really. FS has always had trolls off and on for years and years, long before the move to DW. But fandom and fandom engagement and participation has changed drastically since then. People migrated away from Livejournal and though DW is hanging in there, this type of fandom community that takes place on a blogging platform is not the powerhouse it used to be. Most people don't do fandom like this anymore, it's likely they're not even aware this community exists, and if they did, it wouldn't guarantee they'd want to participate in this medium.

THIS

I've been here since 2010 and I agree 100%. The main problem is demographic.
We're not really getting new users (sometimes we do, but it's pretty rare) and the people who were active during the "golden era" either found new places to hang out, are not in fandom any more or are busier now.
I do believe the medium age here is probably 30-35 years old and it is pretty old compared to other fandom spaces. This format is not how young people do fandom nowadays.
UHM Yeah, I'm old lol

I just want to add that lately we've been having a minimum of 100 comments almost every day. It's not bad for a DAILY community where a lot of people sometimes just lurk due to arriving late.
F!S is not in its prime, but it's still alive and kicking.

It is largely this. I hate how fandom is so spread out now. I am reduced to stalking old fandom friends and getting into stuff I otherwise wouldn't get into (first world problems amirite) if I want to connect with anyone these days. I'm sure it's not great for the old fandom friend either.
