This exactly. Sorry but if I see a take that is both blatantly dumb and blatantly inflammatory, then yeah, I'm gonna call a troll a troll and move on. At a certain point, when a take is both really hostile and really stupid, I honestly don't even care if the poster meant it to be a troll comment; it becomes one by default. Congratulations.

Yes, please call out trolls, that takes so much thought and effort/s
not OP btw, but somewhat agree with OP

Why should anyone waste thought or effort on trolls? When you find used gum stuck under a table, maybe you make a comment that it’s gross, but then you throw it away. You don’t give it a couple of chews first in case it has some valuable flavor to impart.

DA

I occasionally engage to make sure my logical fallacy detection and analysis skills don't atrophy. Plus I figure any engagement I partake in is more for people watching the discussion.

don't like don't read. Commenting one word like troll or no contributes 0 to community irrelevant to the fact if it's really troll or not.

I hear this. It also promotes a degree of all or nothing thinking, which is not helping things in or out of fandom.

no nuance thinking.w

This! I'm not interested in validating trollish comments by giving them my time and mental energy. If others want to respond to troll comments with genuine engagement, good for them, but frankly, if someone posts a troll comment I prefer to see at least a couple of people noting the trollishness. If trollish comments get nothing but earnest engagement, it inadvertently affords a degree of validity to those comments that I don't think benefits the community in the long-run.
