Maybe a Sue. But a Sue who rocked it our hardcore.

There is such a thing as "Sue being done right" and IMO Alanna pulled it off.

(Note: If Pierce's heroines are all Sues, then the same can be said about the HUGE majority of male characters and female characters out there in their own books. Heroes are heroes are heroes, and they always tend to be more special than the people around them.)

All heroes have something "special" to them, or else they're not heroes. Sure you can have main characters that have no real special characteristics (the main male character from Love Hina comes to mind), but those that are heroes and fighters have to have a bit of "special" to them or else they wouldn't be heroes.

If you think about it characters like the male lead in Love Hina fill a specific wish-fulfillment role so they aren't supposed to be "special".

That's the case for a large portion of the harem anime genre, isn't it?

That is the case for harem anime, yes, I was just saying that it's possible to have main characters without special traits but they aren't heroes like those that do.

So couldn't you argue that if a large portion of them are extraordinary then in a sense almost none of them are? Or it takes an extra mile on top of super special?

Well then in her world those with magic and powers are normal, thus those without them (like Kenly) are super special! So yes you could argue that. :)

It's funny you mention that because in the story I'm writing nearly all of the characters have some super special powers, yet one couple gave birth to a girl that was completely normal. O.o She ended up becoming a crazy engineer/scientist, but she was revered in her family as being "special" for having no powers.

I guess "special" is based a lot on the context of the story.

HBICs, while they may exhibit qualities that could be seen as Sue-ish, can never and will never be Sues.

A-men! if the only criteria for Sue-dom is being the chosen one/having special powers/etc, then practically every central character EVER in fantasy is one. People who accuse characters of being Sues because they don't like them miss that the most critical defining point of a Sue is lack of personality, not special powers. Hence, I don't read Tamora Pierce's characters as Sues, because to me they have strong, great personalities. I like the term Mary-Sue, but I think people are wont to overuse the term and in cases where it doesn't really apply.
