Yes, this.

If I wanted to watch people passive-aggressive all over the place or avert their eyes or outright lie to avoid saying what's on their mind, then I'd go hang around irl. :/

I take this to mean that idiots who either don't want to know how to function in a normal society or just can't figure out what assholes they are, who say whatever's on their mind, regardless of who it might hurt, offend, or just annoy... are at least well aware enough to realize that they can't do that in real life and instead stick to the internet because that's better than learning how to deal civilly with people.

[identity profile] sessile29.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people value talking honestly about stuff than wrapping shit up in a pretty bouncy bow, because they value hashing out a subject matter more than just getting along. Honesty =/= assholishness.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-03 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Consider:

You come across someone who has really bad hygiene, a horribly squawking voice, and very unattractive features. Your first thoughts are "my god, that is one hideous person". They ask you for help with something.

Do you a) smile, say "Sorry, I can't help you/sure, what do you need?" and carry on with either going your way or helping them... or b) say "No, the first thing I thought when I saw you was you're a hideous person and I don't want to help you."

There's being honest, which is certainly fine when someone is asking your opinion for something (and honest words don't have to be phrased in the most hurtful and offensive manner possible in order to be honest), and there is being a dick, which is... being a dick.

And just by the way, I'm not talking about you or anyone in particular, in case you were wondering. It's an attitude I've seen displayed by too many people on the internet --- that saying 'true' things in the most hurtful and offensive way possible is somehow okay because it's "just being honest".

For one thing, honesty is not always the best policy --- people don't always think the nicest things about one another, and it's not really 'right' to just spout out whatever one first thinks about another person or whatever is on their mind at the time. For another, there are ways to be honest without being rude.

it's not really 'right' to just spout out whatever one first thinks about another person or whatever is on their mind at the time.

And by that sentence, I'm referring to things like tact. You see your friend after their grandfather's just died. Would you say "Well, I didn't know him so I don't care, really. Let's just hang out and pretend nothing happened because that's easier"? It's probably tone's true sentiments, to some degree, but you don't just say something like that, because it's rude and hurtful.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Tact, sadly, is in short supply on the interent.

Now this is being an asshole. :)

(Anonymous) 2009-07-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
ahhhh nevermind then.

Glad you're aware of it. Heh.

[sessile29 says:]

Sadly, the majority of the populace does not remember this.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I take it to mean that the people you find being assholes on the Internet are the very same ones you socialize with in everyday life. It's only that, on the Internet, they drop the politeness. Otherwise, just where do all the Internet trolls go when the computer's off? The OP's secret urges us to keep in mind that the people we're talking to online are real human beings: this is exactly the flipside of that.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-03 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
To avoid confusion, that comment is not the OP's.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-03 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Woops, sorry OP. Didn't think of that for a moment.

(Anonymous) 2009-07-03 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No prob. :)
