But... Mary-Sue is a fanfiction trope.

Though Daine was never my favorite... I like Aly and Alanna, but Kel's probably my favorite protagonist, and she's the only one without real magic powers or god-chosen stuff, just the animals and Daine can talk to them.

Alanna had more Mary-Sueish powers, but a massive inferiority complex (Partly because of her height, and partly because the girl-having-to-pretend-to-be-a-guy thing) not to mention her temper. Though Daine has a temper too, she was less likely to blow her top over things that didn't matter than Alanna. And once Alanna was no longer the main character, she lost a lot of the sue-ness, and became a sort of Idol-that-is-less-cool-in-real-life.

Aly was sue-ish, because at least the universe hadn't been established yet, but it's subverted again when Aly grows as a character, not to mention the whole Underestimating the God and People Don't Immediately Like Her.

THAT BEING SAID. Mary-sue is still, and always will be, a fanfiction trope. Because honestly? "Everything is about them" "Unique and Special" "Cool Powers".

Superman come to mind? Harry Potter? Luke Skywalker? Heracles?

Mary-Sue is all about taking an established story and universe and putting somebody Oh-So-Speshul into it. And you know what? Even if it is a fanfic, it's not always a bad thing. Sometimes a person just needs to write one and move on.

Amen!

This so hard. No one wants to read a story about a normal person doing normal things their entire life.

Also you win so hard for saying "Heracles". NO ONE GETS THAT RIGHT.

I was actually about to type "Hercules" before realizing my mistake.

High Five, fellow Anon!

FUCKING WORD

I like that you defended her not being a Sue, giving good reasons indeed, but I disagree that it's simply a fanfiction trope. All those characters except Heracles have been called Mary Sues (Gary Stus), particularly Superman. Just because everything is about a character or they're unique and special or have cool powers does not mean the character is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu or not, even. Published characters can take flack for not being developed properly or having the flaws associated with Mary Sues.

Mary Sue originated in fanfiction, but many people refer to original characters by the term as well. Bella Swan is the general example they use. I disagree because Daine and the majority of Tamora Pierce's other heroines are much better examples of the typical Mary-Sue.

The problem with Alanna's and Daine's so-called detractors in personality is that they endeared them to others rather than annoyed them. This is the main reason they are Mary-Sues. If a character's flaws are considered charms by everyone but the character him or herself, that makes them a Mary Sue. They are not 'perfect', perhaps, but no one (aside from the baddies) seems to mind these 'flaws'. Harry Potter, to use one of your examples, had moments where he was distinctly unlikeable, and this was noticed, commented on by the other characters, and developed.

Another major condition for being a Mary Sue is this: not just having a few special abilities or significance, but having a lot. Daine: daughter of a God, exceptionally good archer, special unique magic, tragic past, beautiful, 'different', adored by almost everyone in the book (except the baddies of course), special connection with animals, and always the centre of attention. Alanna: fiery temper, 'different', admired and worried about by everyone except the baddies, has a special magic sword, has magic, is a chosen servant of a Goddess, has a special animal friend, and in love with a prince (at one point).

Keladry may be the one exception.

To my understanding their powers and the like were pretty much just extensions of them.

Daine: Daughter of a god which gave her special magic that in turn gave her a connection with animals. She also a good archer. Daine also happened to have a tragic past that helped make her different and those differences are what got people to pay attention to her. I'd argue about everyone liking her but it's been a while since I've read any of them.

Alanna: Chosen servant of a goddess which lead to magic swords and in a way special animal friends. The magic doesn't make her super sparkly special as plenty of people had magic in that series. So we're left with her temper, being different, and the fact that people looked up to her. Which, to my memory not everyone looked up to Alanna (as far as the good guys) so that point doesn't seem to hold right either.

Once again, been a while since I've read any of them so yeah... probably not the best one to be saying things.

When I say good guys, I don't necessarily just mean their own army, I mean everyone who had influence in the palace and whom we were supposed to sympathize with and think of as good people.

Mary-Sue is a BADFIC trope, at least in my opinion.
