Kind of random, but...

Just out of curiosity, about the 'male thinking' vs 'female thinking'... what are your thoughts on a differentiation between masculine vs feminine thinking, or masculine vs feminine qualities?

Because I know I often consider things in terms of masculine vs feminine, referring to more 'butch' or 'macho' sorts of things as masculine, and softer, artistic sorts of things as feminine. I just figure that it's perfectly normal for men and women to have both feminine and masculine qualities, and that often there are women who have more masculine ones or men who have more feminine ones. :/

I don't know... I'm wondering if that makes me subconsciously mysoginist or something. I hope not. D:

I think the terminology more than anything is tricky. There are traditionally "masculine" and "feminine" ways of thinking - individual vs. collaborative, intellectual vs. emotional, etc. - and I don't mind using them in order to invoke that history of cultural imposition upon men and women; it's when you don't clarify, though, is when things get confused and starts to bleed into this idea that men and women will inherently tend to behave in those ways.

Women and men will tend to act along certain gender lines because gender roles are still strong and still emphasized in today's society. But phrases like "Well, I'm going to like x; I'm a woman/man, aren't I?" are becoming increasingly obsolete, I think. I think people are opening up more and more to the idea that there is no single behavior that will automatically spring from a man or a woman (or from a gay man or a lesbian), that they're all up for grabs.

I think it's pretty problematic to "gender" things, especially personality traits or certain qualities about people. Categorizing artistic ability as "feminine" suggests that it's not gender appropriate for men to be artistic -- in the same way our society considers nurture to be a "feminine" trait, achievement to be a "masculine" trait, which isn't right either since men can obviously be nurturing and women goal-oriented. (The latter really bothers me, since it makes it difficult for men to be equally involved as women in their children's lives.) It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
