That was a nice try but wrong.
Because there are much worse Sue-ish books out there then hers. And yes, I consider Twilight among them. Shoot me.

I'm not saying her books are OH MY GOD AMAZING YOU HAVE GOT TO READ THIS. But I think they are, compared to a lot of teen-lit, much better.

Though I'll be honest and say I probably wouldn't be attracted to someone who wrote about women in a "you must have man or you suck!" way.

Twilight is just bad.

Tamora Pierce? Still bad, in a different way. It's generic fantasy with poorly disguised Author On Board, with cardboard cut out females who all have roughly the same personality and values (and no, one being good with a bow instead of a sword is not a personality difference). Daine, especially, is the epitome of a Mary Sue. The daughter of a God, beautiful, liked by everyone except the baddies, special 'unique' brand of magic, constantly surrounded by animal friends who can speak to her, and always the centre of attention wherever she goes.

But, no, the author is a feminist and the books feature women protagonists. Therefore, she can't possibly have boring characterization, ridiculous plots, or bad prose.

But they don't all have the same personalities. Alanna couldn't hide her anger to save her own children. But with Kel you can't even tell that she's angry. Aly is much more outgoing than the rest of them where Beka is painfully shy. And technically Daine's magic isn't unique. Only the magnitude of it is.
I say again. Fantasy books center on unusual people.

You can be a feminist and a shitty author. That's more than possible.
And there are plenty of books with women protagonists that I can't stomach reading (The Gossip Girl books come to mind as do the - I belive they're called Boyfriend Club books.)
For what is matters, I've never read, and don't plan on reading, and of the Circle books. And my faovirte characters in her world (not protagonists, just characters) are Numair and George.

On a superficial level, they seemed to have some differences. But when it gets right down to their values, senses of humour, what sort of people they admire and anything else that describes the core of their personality? All the same. All just (not very well disguised) echoes of the author herself.

And I apologize for jumping to conclusions about your initial comment.

That might be the best solution, yes. :)

And because I just saw your above comment. I've never really read other books where girls take male roles the way Kel and Alanna do, so I can't really weigh in on them.
Breaking gender roles doens't matter to me so much as how you break them and how you act when you're doing it.
