It's sad to see how BTS stuff for small/mid budget period pieces from like the 1990s go into such detail on the costumes and accessories..and now a lot of stuff looks like Party City Halloween costumes 😬

It was definitely not high budget (which is well known) but every time I see Reign "costume appreciation" gif sets on tumblr, I cringe so hard. I've never seen a historical show with worse costumes. I don't blame the costume designers cause their budget was one dollar and a shoe lace but... I can't look at it.
(Meanwhile I can look at The Tudors just fine, so it's not like I have high standards)

nayrt - I haven't watched Reign but one glimpse of the costumes and I was like... WTF. I'm not an expert, nor am I picky but they look outlandish and cheap.

Sounds fascinating! Do you have a link to the costume designer talking about changes in the industry?

I was curious about this too, OP!

This is sad because while I'm not very knowledgeable about costume design or historical costumes, I love media with a beautiful wardrobe and attention to detail so much.

BBC shows are fantastic for good costuming, even relatively low budget ones, because they have access to the BBC's enormous wardrobe department.

But a lot of it recently is a lack of budget spent on "real life" things like sets and costuming and hair, assuming that they can fix it with CGI or making things darker. Wardrobe, set building and hair/make up is unionised, CGI is (mostly) not (yet).
