For me personally the line is how much of the character's appearance is "the iconic outfit" vs "the body of the being wearing the outfit"

A character whose iconic image is "girl in a bikini" (e.g. Quiet from MGS) is going to be 90% "looking like the girl" and 10% "the recognizable bikini" where as a character whose iconic image is "girl in suit of armor" (e.g. Saber from Fate/Stay Night) is going to be 90% "the recognizable suit of armor" and 10% "the wearer's body". Same with male characters like 90% of cosplaying Zangief from Street Fighter is "literally being a big ass shirtless man" whereas cosplaying Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat is 90% outfit. It doesn't make Zangief less iconic but the imagery relies more heavily upon the body characteristics of the person so if those don't match up it's just kinda wrong-er to me than if idk, Sub-Zero is a 5ft 50 year old woman in his iconic suit and mask. Nothing to do with how attractive the people are

It gets muddy in the middle but the extreme ends are v clear

Oh, this makes sense to me as well.

I can wear a costume, and I do make a lot of effort with cosplay (I've cut and dyed my hair for conventions but I'm no bikini model lol) but...yeah, this.

This is a really good way of putting it. Like, to use two examples from the same piece of media, if you're going to cosplay Tifa you really kind of need to be fit and busty because so much of the character's image is based around being attractive and athletic. But with Aerith, anyone could cosplay Aerith and they would look fine because what makes her iconic is her outfit and the very recognizable braid rather than her body type.

no you don't. anyone can cosplay Tifa. anyone.

are you going to necessarily look in the mirror and think to yourself, gosh I look like I stepped off the screen? maybe not, but that's not the be-all end-all of cosplay. it's not even the most important part, I say as someone who cosplays and puts a lot of effort into looking good. sometimes you just want to wear the outfit and That's Enough. if you want to be a perfect screen-exact vision, that's your choice and it's on you to own it, but you don't get to apply your personal standard to other people.

I will never gatekeep cosplay.

Calm down, the conversation is about how some characters' body shapes are more important or a bigger part of their overall image than others, and it is implied that this is about "cosplay accurately and capture all the important points" not that people are not allowed to cosplay whatever they want, as inaccurately as they want

Anyone can cosplay Kirby but that doesn't mean their costume will be particularly accurate unless they're actually in a round pink body suit

Yeah, I agree, but I would personally be uncomfortable dressing like Tifa and it's not because of my body type. Props to people who do, though! But this secret is about a single cosplayer drawing a line for themselves.

Yeah, exactly. I personally would be comfortable cosplaying Yoko from Gurren Lagann but not Kamina despite the fact that Yoko's outfit shows way more skin (assuming I was using a skintone shirt/bodysuit for Kamina) because I just couldn't pull off the Kamina energy and that's such a huge part of his character. It's not a body type thing, it's just a "I don't have the right vibes for the character" thing.

Tell me about it. There are a lot of characters I love but would never cosplay because I couldn't do their energy/attitude justice.

Like Sailor Moon. I could pull it off body-wise but I couldn't manage that level of cute and cheerful and you're just not Sailor Moon if you're not cute and chipper and smiley.
